列王記Ⅰ：１９章１節

そこで、アハブはイゼベルに、エリヤの行ったことと彼がすべての預言者を剣で殺したことをすべて告げました。
2 そこで、イゼベルは使者をエリヤに遣わして言いました。
「明日の今頃、あなたの命を彼らの一人の命と同じなようにしないならば、神々は私に対して、さらにそうされるでしょう。」
3 彼はこれを見て、起き上がって、自分の命のために出発し、ユダに属するベエルシェバにたどり着いて、僕をそこに置きました。
4 しかし、彼は自ら一日の旅をして荒野に行き、たどり着いて箒の木の下に座ったので、自分のために死ぬことを願ってこう言いました。
「主よ！これで十分です。さあ、私の命を奪ってください！私は先祖よりも優れてはいませんから。」
5 彼は横になって、箒の木の下で眠りました。
すると、見よ！天使が彼に触れて言いました。
「起きて食べなさい！」
6 彼が見ると、見よ！彼の頭には熱い石の上で焼いた餅と、水の入った箱がありました。そして、彼は食べて飲み、また、横になりました。
7 主の使いが再び来て、彼に触れて言いました。
「起きて食べなさい！旅はあなたにとって大きすぎるから。」
8 彼は起き上がって、食べて飲み、その食事ゆえの力を得て、四十日四十夜、神の山ホレブに行きました。
9 彼はここに来て、洞窟に泊まり、見よ！主の言葉が彼に臨んだので、主は彼に言われました。
「エリヤよ！あなたはここで何をしているのか？」
10 彼は言いました。
「私は万軍の神である主のために非常にねたみました。イスラエルの子孫達はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇を投げ捨て、あなたの預言者を剣で殺したので、私、私だけが残され、彼らは私の命を狙って、それを奪おうとしていました。」
11 主は言われました。
「出て行って、主の前に山に立て！」
見よ！主が通り過ぎた時、大風が山を裂き、主の前に岩を砕きましたが、主は風の中におられず、風の後に地震がありました。
12 地震の後には火が起こり、しかし、主はその火の中におられず、火の後には小さな声がありました。
13 エリヤはこれを聞いて、自分の顔を外套でおおい、出て行って、洞穴の入口に立ちました。すると、見よ！彼のもとに声がしてこう言いました。
「エリヤよ！あなたはここで何をしているのか？」
14 彼は言いました。
「私は万軍の神である主のために非常にねたんでいます。
イスラエルの子孫達はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇を投げ捨て、あなたの預言者を剣で殺したので、私、私だけが残され、彼らは私の命を狙って、それを奪おうとしています。」
15 主は彼に言われました。
「行って、ダマスコの荒野に帰り、あなたが来た時、ハザエルをアラムの王として油を注ぐがよい。」
16 またニムシの子エフをイスラエルの王とし、アベルメホラのシャファトの子エリシャをあなたの部屋の預言者とするために、あなたは油を注がなければならない。
17 そして、ハザエルの剣から逃れた者はエフーが殺し、エフーの剣から逃れた者はエリシャが殺すであろう。
18 しかし、私はイスラエルに七千人を残してある。すなわち、バアルに屈しなかったすべてのひざと、バアルに口づけしなかったすべての口である。」
19 そこで、彼はそこを去って、シャファトの子エリシャが十二頭の牛を前にして耕し、彼は十二頭の牛を前にしているのを見つけ出しました。
20 彼は牛を離れて、エリヤのあとに走って行き、言いました。
「私はあなたに祈って、父と母に口づけさせてください！」
すると、彼は言いました。
「戻って行きなさい！私があなたに何をしたと言うのですか？」
21 そして彼は、エリヤが言ったことに従って家に帰り、牛からくびきを取って、これを殺し、その肉を牛の道具で煮て、人々に与え、人々はこれを食べました。
それから起き上がって、エリヤのあとを追い、彼に仕えました。

1 アハブは、エリヤがしたすべての事と、預言者たちを剣で皆殺しにしたこととを残らずイゼベルに告げた。
2 すると、イゼベルは使者をエリヤのところに遣わして言った。「もしも私が、あすの今ごろまでに、あなたのいのちをあの人たちのひとりのいのちのようにしなかったなら、神々がこの私を幾重にも罰せられるように。」
3 彼は恐れて立ち、自分のいのちを救うために立ち去った。ユダのベエル・シェバに来たとき、若い者をそこに残し、
4 自分は荒野へ一日の道のりを入って行った。彼は、えにしだの木の陰にすわり、自分の死を願って言った。「主よ。もう十分です。私のいのちを取ってください。私は先祖たちにまさっていませんから。」
5 彼がえにしだの木の下で横になって眠っていると、ひとりの御使いが彼にさわって、「起きて、食べなさい」と言った。
6 彼は見た。すると、彼の頭のところに、焼け石で焼いたパン菓子一つと、水の入ったつぼがあった。彼はそれを食べ、そして飲んで、また横になった。
7 それから、主の使いがもう一度戻って来て、彼にさわり、「起きて、食べなさい。旅はまだ遠いのだから」と言った。
8 そこで、彼は起きて、食べ、そして飲み、この食べ物に力を得て、四十日四十夜、歩いて神の山ホレブに着いた。
9 彼はそこにあるほら穴に入り、そこで一夜を過ごした。すると、彼への主のことばがあった。主は、「エリヤよ。ここで何をしているのか」と仰せられた。
10 エリヤは答えた。「私は万軍の神、主に、熱心に仕えました。しかし、イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、あなたの預言者たちを剣で殺しました。ただ私だけが残りましたが、彼らはいのちを取ろうとねらっています。」
11 主は仰せられた。「外に出て、山の上で主の前に立て。」すると、そのとき、主が通り過ぎられ、主の前で、激しい大風が山々を裂き、岩々を砕いた。しかし、風邪の中に主はおられなかった。風のあとに地震が起こったが、地震の中にも主はおられなかった。
12 地震のあとに火があったが、火の中にも主はおられなかった。火のあとに、かすかな細い声があった。
13 エリヤはこれを聞くと、すぐに外套で顔をおおい、外に出て、ほら穴の入口に立った。すると、声が聞こえてこう言った。「エリヤよ。ここで何をしているのか。」
14 エリヤは答えた。「私は万軍の神、主に、熱心に仕えました。しかし、イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、あなたの預言者たちを剣で殺しました。ただ私だけが残りましたが、彼らは私のいのちを取ろうとねらっています。」
15 主は彼に仰せられた。「さあ、ダマスコの荒野へ帰って行け。そこに行き、ハザエルに油をそそいで、アラムの王とせよ。
16 また、ニムシの子エフーに油をそそいで、イスラエルの王とせよ。また、アベル・メホラの出のシャファテの子エリシャに油をそそいで、あなたに代わる預言者とせよ。
17 ハザエルの剣をのがれる者をエフーが殺し、エフーの剣をのがれる者をエリシャが殺す。
18 しかし、私はイスラエルの中に七千人を残しておく。これらの者はみな、バアルにひざをかかめず、バアルに口づけしなかった者である。」
19 エリヤはそこを立って行って、シャファテの子エリシャを見つけた。エリシャは、十二くびきの牛を先に立て、その十二番目のくびきのそばで耕していた。エリヤが彼のところを通り過ぎて自分の外套を彼に掛けたので、
20 エリシャは牛をほうっておいて、エリヤのあとを追いかけて行って言った。「私の父と母とに口づけさせてください。それから、あなたに従って行きますから。」エリヤは彼に言った。「行って来なさい。私があなたに何をしたというのか。」
21 エリシャは引き返して来て、一くびきの牛を取り、それを殺し、牛の用具でその肉を調理し、家族の者たちに与えてそれを食べさせた。それから、彼は立って、エリヤについて行って、彼に仕えた。

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying: 'So let the gods do [to me], and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.'
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom-tree; and he requested for himself that he might die; and said: 'It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.'
5 And he lay down and slept under a broom-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him: 'Arise and eat.'
6 And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the hot stones, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said: 'Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.'
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meal forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said unto him: 'What doest thou here, Elijah?'
10 And he said: 'I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.'
11 And He said: 'Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD.' And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake;
12 and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said: 'What doest thou here, Elijah?'
14 And he said: 'I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.' 
15 And the LORD said unto him: 'Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Aram;
16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18 Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.'
19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said: 'Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.' And he said unto him: 'Go back; for what have I done to thee?'
21 And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
