In this assignment, we will work with a 2D mesh or graph of vertices, edges, and triangles. At the vertices we store colors loaded from an image in .ppm format. The goal of this assignment is to reduce the total size of the mesh, but still provide a reasonable approximation of the original image. The images below show meshes with approximately 80,000 triangles, 10,000 triangles, and 1,000 triangles (from left to right), displayed with and without the edges between the triangles drawn with white lines.

To perform this simplication, we will use a standard mesh processing operation, the edge collapse, which is illustrated below. First, we identify an edge in the mesh that should be removed (drawn in blue). Next, we locate the two triangles on either side of that edge (drawn in light blue) and remove these triangles from the mesh. Finally, we locate all triangles using exactly one of the two endpoints of the edge and change that endpoint coordinate to the midpoint of the collapsed edge. Note: We reuse one of the endpoints of the collapsed edge, while the other is deleted. After the edge collapse is nished, the mesh has 1 fewer vertex, 2 fewer triangles, and 3 fewer edges (the blue edge and 2 green edges are removed). Note that if the edge to be collapsed is on the boundary of the image/mesh, the collapse will result in a mesh with 1 fewer vertex, 1 fewer triangle, and 2 fewer edges.

In performing an edge collapse, a local area of the mesh is modied. Triangles change area and edge change length. In the diagrams above we see that the green edges (the edges that were touching one of the endpoints of the collapsed edge) change length. The orange edges (which share a vertex with one or more of the green edges) do not change length; however, their status as legal or illegal may change. After performing an edge collapse, you should recalculate both the length and the legal/illegal status of the green & orange edges.

Mark Twain, whose name has always finds its way onto the list of the America’s top 50 writers on the history, was born and raised up by the river side of the Mississippi. Also set by the Mississippi River, his novel Adventures of Huckleberry Fin was a great success of the world literature. There was a remarkable resemblance between the author himself and the main character of the novel Huckleberry, which made people fall into confusion—“was huckleberry actually Mark himself?” or “was Mark trying to write a biography in somebody else’s name?”. For him, Mississippi didn’t only stand for a river, but also for a life that people should do something for it. Thus, without Mississippi, I think Mark Twin wouldn’t have such a work.

Firstly, Mississippi was the background for both the author and the novel. Mark Twain was born in the vill of Hannibal, Missouri. He was not enjoying his childhood as his father died when he was 12 years old, which made him reluctantly dropped out of the school and went to his brother, who was working as an editor and the young Mark served as an apprentice in order to make a living. By the time of the early 1850s, Mark happened to enjoy the prosperity of the shipping industry on the Mississippi River, at which time he spared every effort to learn how to drive and began a new life as a helmsman. During this period, he drove to many place on the treacherous Mississippi, where he acquired the ability to fight against the dangerous current and see through the every surface of the nature. He then changed his original name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens into the famous one of Mark Twain, which is a term or slang among the helmsman meaning “the leadsman's cry for a measured river depth of two fathoms (12 feet), which was safe water for a steamboat.”(Clemens, Samuel L, 1917) He was so familiar with this river that he regarded the Mississippi River as his hometown without hesitation.

Besides Mark’s early experience, his novel too shared the same place as the background of the story. In the book, affectionate and exhaustive words were used to describe the scenes of the river, and the whole book even was filled with native slangs that made people recognize it as somehow rude. What’s more, the main character Huckleberry was also a helmsman who knew well about the Mississippi. The author used much of his own shipping knowledge to plot the story, making the novel a convincing story that fit the time and truth, which was one of the success the novel had made.(Cornish, F. Secondly, the life over the Mississippi River made Mark twain who he was and stimulates the born of the book. To see from the history, the escape from the society into the wild due to the abomination of the frightfulness and hypocrisy of the society has been one of the most common themes of the novel in the 19th century. Similarities were found in those books as most of them regarded the human and nature as an organic whole where human was one essential part, but the form of the society, especially the industrial revolution, undoubtedly set human and the nature apart, turning the species losing its initial quality of kindness, purity and peace. The commercialization of the modern society was recognized as the reason why people were turning selfish, cruel and reckless with greed. And Mark had also tried to conduct this theme in the book of Adventures of Huckleberry Fin.

The story of the novel began with the escape of the main character, a white teenager whose name was Huckleberry Fin, and the whole story was about how he managed to ship along the great Mississippi and finally went to his destiny. Though the young and obstinate Huckleberry was adopted by a widow who was tremendously attempting to cultivate him, his situation couldn’t be changed considering his surroundings—his alcoholic father who used violence upon him as well as abused him frequently, his step mother who was trying to confine him by the name of traditional education. Last but not the least, Mark Twain’s early experience by the river side encouraged him to fight for the human rights of black people. By the time when the Adventures of Huckleberry Fin was published , The Emancipation Proclamation has already been put into effort for decades, which is to say, Mark Twain was actually raised up under the effectiveness of The Emancipation Proclamation. But the truth turned out to be, the status of black people wasn’t improved in the southern areas. Later Mark Twain changed his anger into words and spread them in the story Huckleberry. He spared much space for the escape of a black slave whose name was Jim. Along with the help of Huck, this two teenagers began their epic journey among the watershed of Mississippi. Through the eyes the two kind teenagers the author reviewed the social civilization of the regions. Sadly, the result turned out to be negative. He regarded the civilization of commercialization to be corrupt and depressive. (Jackson, R, 2002) Also, in Adventures of Huckleberry Fin, civilization seemed to be the everything that stopped people from loving, sharing and being kind. There were no freedom and dependence to mention in such society, even the dignity of one’s was treated as merchandise. The dark pace of society stimulated Mark Twain to fight, not solely with book to publish, but also to walk onto the stage of history to voice for the black people. Thus people may say it was by the River of Mississippi where Mark Twain was enlightened with the awareness to fight against the racialism. Without it, he wouldn’t have made such a success in the literature world, nor would he promote human right for black people.

It is clear that Huckleberry showed up initially in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, where the author was holding a quite ambiguous attitude towards the modern civilization and the society. (Bennett, J, 1974) Actually Huckleberry was not to have his own adventure written into novel, but as Mark Twain gradually went into the maturity of his thoughts of fighting against the society and racialism, his story was then created. it is not difficult to see his effort on promoting the idea of returning to the nature and to eliminate racialism to the whole world.

There are theories that adversity makes a talented person, and Mark Twain might be a typical model to prove that. His early experience of living in a corrupt atmosphere motivated him to pounder over the social issue and inspired him to write down his dream. He realized the responsibility he should shoulder instead of solely running away from it. However, he still wished he had not lived in this society, thus he made up his consolation, huckleberry, a kind, brave young white man who was desperate for freedom as well as willing to give a hand to black people. The story of Huckleberry is also what he had dreamed for his youth. It was based on his youth but was given a better future.

As a conclusion, if Mark Twain was not born and raised up by the Mississippi River, the whole story of Adventures of Huckleberry Fin would be totally different or even not be created, what’s more, the situation of black people would be quite different form now without his great effort in the history. Mississippi was not only the background for both the author and the book, but also the place that enabled the author to have the thought of writing such a book. He created fun stories and plots that revealed the truth appearance of both the backward American society and the corrupt social customs. What’s more, it is the symbol for the author to fight against inequality at that time. He used the book as a weapon. Though Huckleberry was different from Mark Twain himself, he attached all his hope onto Huckleberry. He is his consolation, a escape form the reality and his daydream.

I went to the high school in the United States. The life and study here, exerts a profound influence on my perception of religion, changes my learning method and attitude, and at last nurture my self-reliance.

I came to the United States in 2015 and went to Maria Regina High School. It is because that I expect to understand the different religious culture. Although I am a Muslim, I was still well integrated in this religious school. For the first time, I have enrolled at Catholic girls school, and experienced some change gradually. After three years of study here, I find that although the world's two largest religions have their own very unique features, there are some commonness between those two religions. The life at school taught me to care more about others, and social issues, such as war and peace, arms, human trafficking, abortion, the death penalty, to understand poverty, to help the poor etc. And this schooling allows me to be more caring. This is what many practitioners of Muslims in China advocate. It gets me to realize some common cores of both religions. And more importantly, a more tolerant and inclusive attitude is gradually formed.

In terms of learning, I began to form the habit of self-learning, and no longer relied on tutor's counseling only. And in school, I did not care my own achievements or final result merely. On the contrary, I learned to explore problems by my own , and find a variety of ways to solve things. This helps me to get a better way to learn. And the testing in the form of GPA makes me have a more serious attitude towards learning. I had to rely on tutoring in the home country in the past. This is really an important improvement of learning for me.

I have made another great improvement after I came to the United States: I grew up a lot and learned the self-reliance. When a person carrying a large baggage from Beijing to sit 13 hours of aircraft to New York, he or she must know what the word “self-reliance” means. When I came to the U. S. at first, ordering food at McDonald's was a huge challenge for me. And when foreigners greet me, such as saying “how is it going”, I did not knowhow to react because in the country where I came from, I have been learning “how are you”. Now I am familiar with the American environment. I feel good when I am traveling alone in the United States, and like to go to different states to experience different cultures. I feel that I am part of this new big family, and can feel the love of life and goodness of people around me. I feel more personally how developed the United States is, and how advanced education industry is. This free country is a dream country for me.

Years at Catholic girls school make me full of enthusiasm, sincere, and sympathetic emotions for life. Learning experience here also makes me like to challenge adversity. I am determined to make a bigger contribution to the society by applying to study in higher institution.

My approach to teaching has been inflinfluenced by my overcome of obstacle of writing problems found in most Chinese students enrolled in ENG 107 First-Year Composition. When some students see the essay topics, most of them have a blank mind, and have nothing to say and write. There is little planning of the whole essay. It is a step that is often ignored(Magher). And in the regular writing training, even if the essay is written, it is rarely for them to carefully modify and explain the main argument of essay. Students in the usual writing ignored the importance of a clear guideline and organization of the writing. Thus, a rigid translation of their mother tongue makes the words blunt, and semantic incoherent. In their article, they lack the ability to express and argue personal views and ideas in a reasonable way, and are writing articles only in a narrative manner, with the lack of personal views and emotional expression. This phenomenon is widespread, posing a challenge to the improvement of students’ writing ability . Therefore, in the daily teaching process, I must pay attention to basics of teaching of writing. Before writing the essay, it is primary to writing out the outline with clear argument and thesis. It is “a main idea or thesis which is a short summary of the central idea” (“Learn about the benefits of essay outlining for students and teachers”). It is to help train students to use the language of the orderly thinking, and help students improve their ability to master the language. At the same time, the order of writing outlines at first, and then writing essays is in line with the principle of the teaching of writing; from the simple to complex content. This step by step training principles in English writing can effectively promote the internalization of language knowledge and improve the correct use of English language.

Conclusion

Teaching philosophy is closely related to the teaching purposes, and methods. During the teaching, there was an obstacle of writing problems found in most Chinese students enrolled in ENG 107 First-Year Composition. Under my teaching philosophy of being acommunication bridge, I set my teaching goals as a deep understanding of the academic paper and teaching methods as a training of how to make a clear guideline by themselves before the writing. With this teaching practices, I learned that a guideline can help students express and argue personal views and ideas in a reasonable way and the importance of teaching step by step .
