In Japan, the number of children with myopia is steadily increasing.
The increase in myopia is a problem not only in Japan, but also around the world.
In 2016, an Australian research group published the results of an analysis stating that "by 2050, half of the world's population, approximately 4.8 billion people, will be myopic."
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned that myopia is a "public health crisis."
In light of this, research is being conducted around the world into treatments to slow the progression of myopia.
Myopia is a phenomenon in which the eyeball stretches and becomes longer.
(→ "Do unused eyes become myopic? Shocking facts revealed by animal experiments")
It progresses during the period of growth, so measures and treatments during this period are important.
In this and the next installment, we will introduce five treatments that have been medically proven to be effective and safe.
① Orthokeratology (at our hospital, iOK® = individual, Oguri Kinshi, Orthokeratology (Orthokeratology that can be tailored to each individual's cornea)
Orthokeratology not only corrects myopia, but also suppresses the elongation of the eye axis, which is the cause of myopia (an average of 30-60% suppression effect compared to normal glasses or contact lenses), as reported in many medical research reports, and there are also reports of its effectiveness and safety over more than 10 years.
Research began in the 1960s, and it is a reliable treatment that has been prescribed to thousands of people at our clinic.
Our clinic lends out contact lenses specifically for orthokeratology.
We offer a trial period, so you can check the results of the improvement in naked eye vision.
If it is determined that the lenses are safe to use, they will be applicable from the first grade of elementary school.
Next time, we will introduce the other four treatments, but at present, orthokeratology is the most excellent treatment in two points:
"Improvement of naked eye vision"
"Suppression of myopia progression"
In addition, although it is a treatment that prescribes "contact lenses", it is eligible for medical expense deduction.
This is an advantage over glasses and contact lenses worn during the day.
