Here is one of the first workable typewriters, built by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873.
In these first typewriters, vertical wires operated the typebars, which hung in a circle under the platen. To prevent the wires and typebars from crossing, and interfering with one another, Mr. Sholes purposely placed frequently-used letters in different quadrants of the typebar circle. Mr. Sholes' solution to his mechanical problems, resulted in this keyboard.
