I'll show you some photoes of our house showing how we, typical Japanese , spend usual New Year's Day in Japan.
The first piture is of the shelf of the entrance hall.
I hang Shouen Uemura's
"Tsudumi:Japanese percussion".
I placed a pair of the guard dogs (Komainu) from Hong Kong. (So, actually, I'm not sure how they are called in Hong Knong...
This beautiful white orchid is the gift from my precious students' Moms...
I also hang Shouen Uemura at the display corner ( Tokono-ma) in the tatami mats room (Japanese room).
I have to confess that we had a few cameria flowers this year.
However, I arranged camerias in front of the picture.
I used to cook several special dishes for the New Year...
but I take less time to cook and get some cooked dishes from the department store...
We usually get those dishes from Minocyu , of which head office is in Kyoto, which means their taste is not too sweet, nor too salty.
We usually go to our district's shirine.
I like pulling the lottery (Omikuji) so I pulled this at Zojoji temple ----however strange it seems tobe, we Japanese go to some temples too on New Year's Day!---
I pulled out this lottery and it contains a very small object in there.
Mine was 'The Frog'
Frog (in Japanese ka-e-ru) means :
Something inportant come back to you.
Or you can came back ssfely from your trip ir something. etc.
There are more objects like Goddess, magic cane(uchidenokozuchi), fan, etc.
