前回、米国政府系機関が学校での脊柱検診は効果がないという立場、一方米国内の
医学会はその政府系機関の決定に反対表明という状況があることをお伝えしました。
今回は、米国の患者さん側からの情報をお伝ええしたいと思います。

米国ではいま現在も約半分の州では学校での脊柱検診(school screening)が公的に
実施されているところと、義務づけられていない州とが存在します。
その様子が、患者さんの声からも見えてきます。
そして、ここは側彎症の掲示板ですから、患者さんという立場で言えば、
なぜうちの地域、うちの学校ではスクリーニングがないのか !
なぜ、もっと早くから / 全ての学年で スクリーニングがないのか !
それらがなされていれば、カーブの小さなもっとマイルドな側わんのときに発見
できただろうに....という気持ちに集約されそうです。
◇My daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis by her pediatrician during her
annual physical last May (at the end of 6th grade),
娘は6学年生の終わりに実施した年次検診で側彎症と判明した。
and was consequently confirmed by our orthopedist (30 degrees thoracic, 34
degrees lumbar, with rotation). We live in Maryland, where school
screenings are only conducted during 7th grade.
角度は30度/34度。メリーランド州に住んでいるのですが、ここでは7学年生のとき
だけスクリーニングがあります。
I feel very strongly that her scoliosis would have been picked up sooner
if there had been a screening during 6th grade, when she had her growth
spurt. If her condition would have been identified sooner,
it's possible that the degree of her curves would not be as significant
because she would have been braced sooner.
もし6学年生の期間中に検診が実施されていたならば、こんなにひどくなる前に
発見できたと思うのです。
◇I live in Indiana and we get checked in 5th 7th and 9th grade. I got
checked in 5th grade and that was like right when my growth spurt began and
i was really lucky.
私はインディアナ州に住んでいます。ここでは5学年生、7学年生、9学年生のときに
検診があります。私は5学年生のときの検診で発見されたので、ラッキーでした。
◇ I lived in Nashville, TN in 7th grade and no schools of my knowledge
check for scoliosis until about a year ago. and only do now. If my school
had checked in 7th grade they could have caught my curve before it even hit
30 degrees.
私はテネシー州ナッシュビルに住んでいました。7学年生のときでしたが、そこでは
検診はありませんでした。....現在は実施されているようですが。もし7学年生の
ときにあったら、30度台のカーブで発見できたかもしれません。
◇I live in Mississippi. I am not sure if all schools in this state do
routine checks are not. There is a local organization here that pushed for
these routine checks. They are checked in the 5th grade and again in the
8th grade.
私はミシシッピィー州に住んでいます。ここの全ての学校で検診をしているか
どうかはわかりませんが、ある組織団体が検診をするように啓蒙しています。
5学年生と8学年生のときに検診が実施されています。
◇I live in Pennsylvania and they check in 7th grade.

◇I would like to see our children checked at the 4th or 5th grade level of
school since they are maturing so much faster now a days.
いまのこども達は思春期を迎える時期が早まっているので、検診ももっと早く...
4学年生とか5学年生で実施してもらえるといいと思います
◇In California, PUBIC schools are checking in 7th grade, unfortunately
Private schools are not required to do a screening.
カリフォルニア州では公立学校では7学年生でスクリーニングがありますが、
私立学校ではスクリーニングは義務づけられていません。
◇I live in England and there are no screenings in school at all and there
is no public awareness of scoliosis
私は英国に住んでいますが、ここでは学校検診は行われていません
◇I live in Ontario,Canada and our schools don't even do screenings for it.
私はカナダのオンタリオ州に住んでいますが、ここでもスクリーニングは行われて
いません。
◇I'm a 15 year old boy from Louisiana and the law here is that the
children should be checked from 4th grade and up.
私はルイジニア州に住んでいます。ここの法律では4学年生からずっとチェックする
ことになっています。
◇In Texas public schools are required by law to have scoliosis screening,
but iit is largely left up to the individual school districts as to when
they are performed.
テキサス州では、学校での脊柱検診は法律で実施が定められています。しかし、
それをいつ実施するかはそれぞれの学校の判断にまかされています。
I worked as a school nurse and in my district we were required to do the
screening in sixth and ninth grades, the thought being this is the largest
period of growth for adolescents and when scolosis is most apt to be
detected. We were always taught that it is a "screening" and not able to
detect all cases of scoliosis/kyphosis, much like a vision screening does
not always pick up all eye problems.
私はスクールナースとして働いています。そして私のいる地域では、6学年生と
9学年生のときにスクリーニングがおこなわれます。この時期が思春期でもっとも
成長するときであり、側彎症が発見しやすいときです。私たちはつねに、これは

It would be nice to have screening done at earlier ages but in the "real
world" this is probably not feasible for public schools. Just think, in the
60's and 70's many students were not screened at all. I guess my suggestion
is to find out what your own school system has in place for school spinal
screening, and if the screening is not done until a later age, check with
your doctor.
もちろんもっと早い時期にもスクリーニングができるのが理想ですが、しかし
現実として、公立学校でそれは難しいです。たとえば、1960年代とか70年代には
スクリーニングはまったくありませんでした。私の提案は、各自がそれぞれの学校
でのスクリーニングの時期をチェックして、それ以外の時期には、ホームドクター
に依頼する、というような方法を検討すべきだと思います。
◇ New Jersey school screenings
The school nurse checks in 6th & 8th grades. In my daughter's case, nothing
was found in 6th grade. Since they skip 7th grade, she wasn't checked again
until 8th grade & by then she had a 45 degree S-curve (the other curve is
27). Could it have gotten that bad that fast?? It's all my fault because I
never took her to the pediatrician for a regular physical between 6th & 8th
grades. Otherwise, it would have been found sooner.
ニュージャージー州では、スクールナースが6学年生と8学年生に対してチェック
します。私の娘の場合、6学年生のときなんともありませんでした。そして7学年生
はスキップしていますので、8学年生のチェックで側彎症が発見され、そのときには
すでに45度/27度のダブルカーブに進行していました。こんなには早く進行する
ものだったのでしょうか? 7学年生のときにホームドクターに定期診断してもらわ
なかったことが悔やまれます。
