Jackson Street Roundhouse 100

Roundhouse anniversary marked with a party

Last update: April 12, 2007 – 3:45 PM

It was 1907. American actress Katharine Hepburn was born in Hartford, Conn. The first retail gas station opened in St. Louis. The first ball was dropped in Times Square to mark the new year. And the Jackson Street Roundhouse opened in St. Paul.

It was one of the nation's last fully functioning railroad steam engine maintenance shops. On Saturday and Sunday, the roundhouse kicks off its 100th anniversary celebration with unlimited caboose rides, bluegrass music and birthday cake.

The Great Northern Railroad built the roundhouse to service passenger trains' steam locomotives. It was sold to an oil company in 1959 when maintenance functions were moved to the St. Paul Union Depot roundhouse, according to the Minnesota Transportation Museum, which acquired the property in 1985 after it had seen various uses. The museum is restoring portions of the roundhouse.

Visitors can see vintage railroad cars, including the Hustle Muscle, the first 3,600-horsepower, 20-cylinder diesel electric locomotive manufactured by General Motors Corp.

For hands-on fun, there are interactive railroading and transportation exhibits -- and a chance to check out the daily railroad operations, including the restored turntable, which came from Great Northern's Minneapolis Junction roundhouse.

When the kids scramble aboard the Thomas the Tank Engine play area, parents will have a moment to take a load off.
