Back from my quick weekend trip to Montreal and back on the Adirondack equipped with Amtrak's last dome in service, former GN Great Dome "Ocean View".
First, I have to say that if you are withing reasonable distance of the route, do not miss it's last week of operation - its last round trip is scheduled for next Saturday/Sunday, Nov. 10 and 11. Besides the ttraction of riding a dome, the route is spectacular and shouldn't be missed if you have never traveled by rail between New York and Montreal. The ride up the Hudson and along Lake Champlain are truly breathtaking - even by Western scenery standards. There are even some fall colors left to be seen this late in the season.
We boarded in Croton-Harmon at 8:30 and enjoyed the fast ride up the Hudson to Albany.
The train was quite full, but there was an Amlounge with table seating on both sides of the food booth, so there were always tables available.
At Albany, I was a bit concerned that the dome wouldn't be available for any one of a number of reasons, so when we stopped for the engine change, I had to jump out and see if it was true. To my relief, I could see the back end of the Ocean View up at the engine terminal, with our replacement P40 idling in front. (The Adirondack gets an engine swap at
Albany because Amtrak doesn't have enough dual-mode P40's to go around).
Once the Ocean view was attached - right behind the engine and in front of the cafe car - I headed up for the climb out of the hudson valley to Schenectady. (It's a fairly substantial grade on the Albany hill and NYC used pushers on the back of passenger trains to get them over the hump).
I have to say that the Ocean View has seen better days and it looks like it hasn't had any substantial maintenance in awhile. Smells like a heritage car too - blend of stale smoke and carpet with a finish of vinyl. The downstairs cafe was not used as a cafe because we still had the Amcafe car in the consist.
Upstairs, the car seems to have its configuration from its Auto train days with a combination of booth tables and center-facing seats (that did not swivel). The side windows were reasonably clean, but the end windows were not, especially the forward-facing center window since it was right behind the engine.
