The pix of 1060 with all the smoke is a very interesting and certainly rare shot. I can't say where it is, but you will notice the smoke is coming from a fire on the ground around the position of the front driver. This tells me they were going to weld a broken crosshead or piston rod while still on the engine. The welder builds up a pre-heating fire to get the parts as hot as he can before he welds. The fire would usually be allowed to burn 12 hours prior to the actual welding. After the welding, the fire remains and is allowed another 12 hours to gradually burn out. The reason for this is to make certain there is no stress buildup in the parts due to the welding, or it will break very soon again. Obviously it is better to do this outdoors than in the shop. It is not so likely to burn the shop down
