Today, let’s talk specifically about politics. The gravitational pull toward political extreme is strong—to the point where it has become frighteningly easy to let our politics inform our faith more than we let our faith inform our politics.

You’ve probably heard people say something like, “How can anyone be a Christian and support them?” It’s not hard to come up with a list of Bible verses that support our political preferences. It’s easy to become convinced that Jesus would have supported the same people we support. But there isn’t a single political party that is fully in line with Jesus’ vision of Heaven on Earth.

Our hope doesn’t come from who sits at the top of our government. Our hope comes from who sits on Heaven’s throne. Regardless of who leads our nations, God is still our King.

Are you solely relying on your government or elected officials to bring hope to your community? Then you’re missing out on your God-given role to be a light in a dark world. Does your sense of peace or joy rise and fall on who’s in power? Then you’re missing a chance to rely on God as the provider of every good thing you need. Do you lovingly listen to opposing views in an effort to understand where those viewpoints came from? Do you meet the needs of your neighbors when you’re able? And are you striving for justice, mercy, and humility in yourself, your home, your workplace, and your community just as passionately as you’d like your government leaders to? Then you’re living the different kind of life that our heavenly Father has asked us to live.

A wise pastor once said, “Every time we take a side, we divide.” This doesn’t mean we don’t do our civil duty and choose a side to support or stand up for what we believe in. Of course we do! As Christians, we should use every resource we have available to serve the people in our communities. It does mean, as Christians, we don’t reduce our neighbors to “this side” or “that side.” Our personal identity doesn’t come from our political ideas. Our identity is as a child of God. Our neighbors? They’re made in the image of God, too. We’re all sinners in need of salvation. In that regard, there can be no side, no division. And we must fight to keep that truth sealed in our hearts and minds. We must engage and stand differently. Instead of settling for division, we fight for unity.

Our battle is not against flesh and blood. Therefore, we cannot fight our battles the same way the world does. As disciples of Jesus, we fight by praying our prayers and loving our neighbors. This is how we faithfully follow Jesus in a divided world.

Today, we enter Israel’s story at a time when a new mountain comes into view—Mount Zion.

Decades after their encounter with God at Mount Sinai, the Israelites arrive in Canaan. God promised to bring them to this Eden-like place, where they can fulfill their purpose of being a blessing to the entire world by following God’s instruction (Gen. 12:2-3).

In the holy city of Jerusalem, King Solomon eventually builds a permanent temple for God on Mount Zion to replace the portable tabernacle (1 Kgs. 8). Mount Zion is another name for Mount Moriah, where God first called Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (2 Chron. 3:1; see Day 2 of this plan).

The Israelites can ascend Mount Zion to worship God; the temple is God’s “house,” so to speak. And as on previous mountaintops, Heaven and Earth unite in this temple.

By dwelling with Israel in the temple, God blesses and protects the people. Psalm 48 envisions deadly enemies running scared once they behold the divine magnificence of Jerusalem. To gaze on the splendor of the city and its mountaintop temple is, in a sense, to see God (Ps. 48:12–14).

But the Israelites cannot receive God’s protection if they’re distrusting God and doing what’s right in their own eyes (see Jer. 7). To enjoy God’s blessing and share it with others, they must trust in his wisdom and follow his teaching.

The Place to Start

There are so many places that we can go to learn about something new and grow in knowledge. Books are full of free access to learn anything you can dream up. The internet is also overloaded with content and ways to learn about any subject imaginable.

While those are great places to start when building knowledge, Scripture tells us that the beginning of all knowledge is fear of God. This means that while we can learn things from anyone, the beginning of true knowledge begins with God.

The fear of the Lord doesn’t necessarily mean that you should be afraid of God. What it means is that we should live our lives in awe of Him. We do this first by recognizing who He is. He is the creator and source of all things. He is all-powerful and all-knowledgeable. God’s Word says He holds the power of life and death in His hands. These are certainly attributes that should cause us to be in awe of God.

Scripture also tells us that God is loving, gracious, and merciful. Even though we, His own creation, previously abandoned Him and rebelled against Him, God graciously gave us access back to Himself through His Son, Jesus. The God who created the universe loves each and every one of us.

Knowing God rightly and being in awe of who He is and what He has done is the beginning of all knowledge.

We would be foolish to turn away from such a powerful and gracious God. While we can learn a lot about many different things through a book or the internet, the most essential and important piece of knowledge about God Himself comes from His Word.

Spend some time with God in prayer, thanking Him for who He is and what He has done for you. Begin a habit of reading Scripture regularly so that you can come to know Him more and more.

Colossians 1:9-14 9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. 13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Spiritual discernment protects us from deception. Sin is often dressed up to look tempting and appealing. But if we think what looks good and feels right must be okay, we’re in danger of being misled by the enemy.

霊的識別力とは、何が正しいか、何が間違っているかを判断するために神から与えられた能力です。私たちの精神の動揺、つまり霊的な「雑音」を無視することは、悪い、有害な道への一歩です。私たちの選択が神の意志と一致しているという確信を得るには、聖霊との明確なつながりが必要です。

Spiritual discernment is our God-given capacity to judge what’s right and wrong. Ignoring an agitation in our spirit—or spiritual “static”—is a step onto a bad and harmful path. We need a clear connection to the Holy Spirit to have assurance that our choices are aligned with God’s will.

時には、チャンスは無害に見えたり、あるいは、とても魅力的に見えたりすることがあります。しかし、もし私たちの中にいる聖霊が、それを追い求めないようにという合図を送っているなら、私たちは追い求めるべきではありません。何らかの理由で、神は私たちがそのような状況にいることを望んでいないのです。そして、推測することはできますが、従順であることでどんな危険を回避できたかは決して分からないかもしれません。

Sometimes an opportunity appears harmless or, more likely, very appealing. But if the Holy Spirit within us sends a signal not to pursue it, then we shouldn’t—for some reason, God doesn’t want us in that situation. And though we can speculate, we may never know what danger we avoided by being obedient.

罪はしばしばきれいな包みに包まれてやって来ますが、神の子らは聖書の知恵をもって見れば、そのきらびやかさや偽りの美しさの裏側を見通すことができます。これは清い心と識別力のある精神からのみ生まれます (コロサイ 1:9-14)。賢明な信者とは、祈り、悔い改め、聖書の訓練を日常的に行う人です。

Sin often comes wrapped in a pretty package, but God’s children can see past the glitter and false beauty if they choose to look with scriptural wisdom. This comes only from a clean heart and discerning spirit (Colossians 1:9-14). An astute believer is one who makes prayer, repentance, and biblical training a regular part of his or her routine.
