春秋のさだめ（４/４）

私（菅原孝標女）の歌：

あさ緑　花もひとつに　かすみつつ　おぼろに見ゆる　春の夜の月

　資通卿は、私の歌を何回も口の中で繰り返されたあと、

　　今宵より　のちの命の　もしあらば　さは春の夜を　形見とおもはむ

　

　すると、秋の夜が好きといった女官が、

　　人はみな　春に心を　よせつめり　我のみや見む　秋の夜の月

　After Lord Yoshimichi repeated my poem over and over again,

      If I were to live long after    I would think of  spring night 

      As a memento of  meeting   And talking you stories  

 Then the lady-in-waiting who said she liked autumn nights,

      Both of you seem eager about spring    I'll be the only one

      Looking at the moon alone     On an autumn night

すると、資通卿は、

「うん、これは、なかなかおもしろそうだな」と興がって、どちらにつくか、決めかねておいでのようである。お年は38歳。ダンディな男ぶりだが、浮ついたところがなく、しっとりとして、このもしいお人柄に見える。歌や蹴鞠にすぐれ、琵琶の姪shとしても知られる、当代きっての文化人であった。

  Then, Lord Sukemichi became excited and said, "Yes, this looks quite interesting." And seemed unable to decide whch side to take. His age is 38. He is dandy, but has a gentle, pleasant personality without being too pretentious. He excels at poetry and kemari, and is known as a master of biwa. He is one of the most cultural figures in our time.

 資通卿とは、そのまま別れたが、それにしてもずいぶん長話をしたものだ。資通卿は、私が誰かということも、ご存じないままであった。私のほうも、誰とも知られまいとしていた。

　I parted with Lord Sukemichi on the spot, but anyway, we had quite a long talk. He didn't even know  who I was. I didn't want him to know about me either.

「とはいうものの、冬の夜もなかなか捨てがたいものですよ。降り積もった雪の上に寒月が照り映える夜、ひちりきの音がふるえるように聞こえてくると、春も秋もいっぺんに消し飛んでしまうほど、心ひかれますからね」と話し続けたあと、資通卿は私たち二人の顔をながめ、「あなたがたは、どの季節がお好きですか」と聞かれた。一緒にいた女官が、「私は秋ですわ」と答えたので、私は同じことをいうのもつまらないと思い、歌でこう答えた。

　　あさ緑　花もひとつに　かすみつつ　おぼろに見ゆる　春の夜の月

" However,  winter nights are also hard to let go of.  On a night when the cold moon shines on the fallen snow, you hear the trembling sound of a  hichiriki.

 It's so captivating that spring and autumn disappear all at once."  Lord Sukemichi kept saying , and then he looked at both of us , saying,"Which season do you like?"

 The lady-in-waiting with me replied, "I love autumn."

 I thought it would be boring to say the same thing, so I responded in poetry:

       Under the pale green sky   Cherry blossoms appear vaguely

       I love the hazy moon          On spring nights

更級日記より・・日本人の繊細な情感を外国の人にもくみ取ってもらえるといいけど...

　すけみち卿の春秋観

（引込思案な私だが、すけみち卿とは話がはずんだ）

すると資通卿は、

「私のまだ知らない、あなたのようなかたがいらっしゃったのですね」と私のことをめずらしがられ、、なかなか席を立たれようとしない。折からぱらついてきた時雨が、木の葉をかきならしていくのを、「今夜のような闇夜も、かえって風情がありますね。月があかるいと、相手の顔が見えすぎて、きまりが悪いこともありますから」といわれ、さらに春や秋の季節の眺めに、話題を移された」

　Then Lord Sukemichi became curious about me and said, "There is someone like you here I don't know yet." and he didn't want to leave his seat. The shower that began to fall then was rustling the leaves of the trees. Listning to it, he said,

"Even on a dark night like tonight, there is rather a certain elegance. When the moon is bright, you can see the other person's face too much and it can be awkward."

 He then moved his topic on to the views of the spring and autumn seasons.

「春はやはり霞がたつのが、いいですね。空がのどかに霞みわたり、月もおぼろで明るくはないけど、すみずみまでが夢まぼろしのように、ぼかされて見える。そんなとき、ゆるやかに弾き鳴らす琵琶の音が、どこからか聞こえてくるのは、ほんとうにいいものですよ」

 "It's nice to see a haze in spring. The sky is balmy and hazy, and the moon is dim and not bright, but every corner seems blurred like an illusion. At such times, it's really nice to hear the gentle sound of biwa being played from somewhere.

秋は秋で、澄み切った月が手に取るばかりで、空に霧などがかかっていても、陰らすことさえできないような夜は、風の音、虫の声さえもかさなって、哀切きわまりない心地にさせられます。

  そんなとき、琴がかき鳴らされ、横笛が吹き澄まされるのを聞くと、「春はどこがいいのだろう」と思ってしまいます。」

 Autumn is autumn, when the clear moon is just on the palm of your hand, and even the fog in the sky cannot hide it, the sound of the wind and the chirps of insects overlap, making you feel extremely sad. 

 At such times, when I hear the koto being strummed and flute being blown clear, I find myself thinking, "What good is spring?"

春秋のさだめ（１）ー『更級日記』より

菅原孝標女（すがわらのたかすえのむすめ）が宮仕えの女官をしていた時の話：ーいまも同じか　女心は？ー

      春秋のさだめ  Judging  Seasons

忘れもしない、あれは私が35歳（1042年)の秋のことである。10月初めのある夜、内親王さまの御殿の広間で仏事があった。私は親しい女官のひとりと広間に近い戸口にすわりにいった。読経を聞きながら、ふたりでひそひそ話をしていると、廊下をこちらに来るひとがあった。源資通卿（みなもとのすけみちきょう）、時の政府の高官である。

「こちらへいらっしゃるようだわ。どうしましょう」私が相手の女官にささやくと、

「いまさら逃げ出して、受け持ちの女官を呼びにいったりしたら、かえって失礼よ。ここは、このままでいましょうよ」と彼女が答えた。

 I’ll never forget it. It happened in the fall when I was 35 years old.  One night in early October, a Buddhist service was held in the hall of the Imperial Princess.

 That evening, a monk with a very good voice was going to chant sutras, so I went to sit in the doorway near the hall with one of my friendly ladies-in-waiting, just wanting to hear him. As we were talking with whispers listenig to the sutra chanting, we saw someone coming toward us in the fallway. He was Lord Minamoto-no Sukemichi, a high-ranking government official at that time.

 "It looks he's coming this way. What should we do?" I whispered to the other lady-in-waiting.

She replied, "It would be rude if we run away now and call for the lady in charge. Let's stay here."

 はたして資通卿は、私たちのそばへ来て、話しかけた。落ち着いて物静かなようす。話しぶりも穏かな中年男性である。

「そちらの、もうひとりのかたは、どなたですか」と、私のことを聞くのが、少しもいやらしさがない。世間の殿方のように、色っぽい話はせずに、楽しいこと、悲しいことさまざまの話題を、しみじみとていねいに話しかけてこられる。これには私の心もほぐれ、黙ってばかりもいられなくて、ついつい話がはずんだ。

  As we expected, Lord Sukemichi came to our side and spoke to us. He is a middle aged man with a calm and quiet demeanor and soft-spoken manner. 

 "Who is that other person over there? He asked about me. There was not the least bit of lewdness in his voice. He didn't talk in a sexy way like gentlemen in the world, but spoke to us in a thoughtful and polite manner about a variety of topics, both happy and sad. This relaxed my heart, and I could no more stay silent and just started talking.                                    　ーつづくー

更級日記の感性

『更級日記』から「春秋のさだめ」の現代語訳と英訳を数回に分けてブログにしたいと思います。

手始めに「春秋のさだめ」の最後の一節で、作者、菅原孝標女（すがわらのたかすえのむすめ）の心情に触れてみます。

お目見え以下のパートタイムの女官にすぎない私（菅原孝標女）は、殿中の廊下で公卿の資通卿（すけみちきょう）から声をかけられたのがきっかけで、淡い恋心を抱くようになって３年が過ぎた。

　（現代語訳）資通卿とのかかわりは、これきりになってしまった。資通卿はまじめなお人柄なので、私の身元を聞き出そうともなさらなかった。あしかけ三年間、その出会いは三回だけ。それも好ましい相手と意識しただけの、淡々とした間柄だった。恋ともいえないような、プラトニックなつきあいに終わったが、私にとっては忘れがたい思い出である。

（英訳） So far was my relationship with Lord Sukemichi. He was such a serious person that he didn't even try to find out my identity.  For three years.  During that time, we met only three times.  It was just a calm relationship where each regarded the other as an ideal conversation partner.  Although we ended up with a platonic relationship that could hardly be called love, it's  an unforgettable experience for me.
