『待つわ』(A Time for Waiting by H.L. Welch)

①ジーンは勝手口の窓ガラスに額を押し当てていた。彼女の火照（ほて）った皮膚は冷たくて心地よかった。彼女はいつまでも、いつまでも、こうして暗がりの中で佇んでいたかったのだが、しかし家に入らなければならなかった。

母さんがもう寝ていてくれればいいのだけど・・・（続く）

原文：Jean rested her forehead against the glass in the side door. it felt cool and good against her flushed skin. She wanted to stand there in the darkness for a long, and long time but she had to go in.

　If only her mother had been in bed...

 著者H.L.Welchはニューヨーク在住の主婦。1952年にShort Shortコンテストで一等賞を獲得した作品。（BEST SHORT SHORT STORIES　南雲堂より）

ジーンはデートの後の火照った額をいつまでも勝手口の窓ガラスに押し当てていたかった。

②母さんが寝ていてくれれはいいのだが・・・しかし台所から微かな声が聞こえてきた。そんな台所へは入って行たくなかった。夕暮れに体験したあの貴重な魔法の潮（うしお）はもはや消えてしまいそうだったが、それを失ってしまうなんて彼女には耐えられなかった。まだ消えないで、まだ、もう少しの間だけ。デイック、デイック・・・(続く）

③　ジーンとデイックの二人は、宵闇に覆われた静寂な通りをぴったりと寄り添って歩いて来たのだった。映画の後、二人はサムの店に入っていき、ソーダを飲んで、凄くはしゃいで、そこにいた連中と騒ぎまくってしまった；しかし、帰り道では、なぜか二人はお互いにあまり言葉を交わさなくなっていた。

原文　 They had walked very close together through the quiet darkened streets, she and Dick. After the show they had gone to Sam's for sodas and they had been very gay and silly with some of the crowd that was in there; but on the way home, somehow, they hadn't had much to say each other.　(続く）

　ジーンとデイックは暗い夜道を寄り添って歩いていた、ほとんど押し黙ったまま。

④デイックはジーンの手を取って上着のポケットに入れておくだけで十分だった。ジーンの手は彼のがっしりした若い指にじっと握られたままになっていた。このようにして、風すら吹かない春の夜道を黙々と歩いているだけで十分だった。（続く）

原文：④It was enough for Dick to take Jean's hand in his and place it, still enclosed by his strong young fingers, in his jacket pocket. It was enough to walk quietly like that through the breathless spring night.

初恋ショートショート-5

『待つわ』- ⑤A Time for Waiting By H. L. Welch (New York  In 1950's)

映画を観たあと、ジーンとデックは寄り添って暗い夜道を歩いてきた。

⑤彼女の家の前で、二人は裏手の車庫に通じている車道（くるまみち）に入った。勝手口まで来るとジーンは立ち止まって、無言でデックを見上げた。デックは彼女を戸口からそっと引き戻して、庭の中に入って行った。二人は毎年春になると強烈な薫りを放っているライラックの茂みの黒い影の中に佇んだ。月は空高く浮かんでいて、月の光に浸された庭と小さなガレージは神秘的な影と銀色の光になっていた。ここは新天地、生まれて初めて訪れた場所だとジーンは思った。（続く）

原文：⑤At her house, they turned into the driveway. Jean stopped at the side door  and looked up at Dick wordlessly. He pulled her gently away from the door and into the yard. They stood in the black shadow of the lilac bush that smelled achingly of all springs. The moon rode high, drenching the yard and the small garage in mysterious shadows and silvery light. It seemed a new place to Jean, a place she had never been before.
