4. 旬を逃すと、山菜も伸び過ぎて、食べ頃を過ぎてしまう。

⇒ 旬を逃すとは、どういうことか、考える。慣れてくれば、あまり考えなくても、英語が出るようになるが、それまでは、やはり練習が要る。考えるというのは、自分の持っている英語という道具を、どうすれば活用できるか考えること。自分の持っている道具を活用できなくては、新しい道具（知識）が入って来ても、使いこなすことは難しい。単に、単語や表現を覚えたら、それで自由に英語が話せるかと言うと、そんなに単純なことではない。練習を通して、自分の持つ道具の使用法に、いかに習熟するかが大事である。

旬を逃すとは、簡単に言うと、遅すぎるということである。late を使って、例えば

・If you are late. 

・If you are too late. 

・If you are too late to go there.

・If you are too late to go to the mountains for edible wild plants. 

・If you are too late to go and collect edible wild plants. 

逆に言うと、　急がなければ～　ということなので　

・If you don't hurry.

・If you don't go there quickly. 

・If you don't go there soon (enough).

旬を、シーズンと考えて、旬を逃すということは、そのシーズンの後に行くことなので

・If you go there after the season for edible wild plants.

・If you go there to collect wild plants after the season is over.

 

season に関して、in season （旬）、out of season（旬、季節外れ）という言い方がある。

・Strawberries are in season. Strawberries are out of season. のように使う。今回の「旬を逃す」ということは、季節ではない、季節外れと考えれば、

・If wild plants are out of season / not in season, ~  のように表現できる。

過ぎるということで、時間的に「後」ということであれば、過ぎるの意味の　past （副詞で）を使って、

・If we are past the season for edible wild plants, のように言える。

うちの教室の生徒さんであれば、速習（暗唱用例文）【冷蔵庫】にある　The milk is past the expiration date. （牛乳が賞味期限切れ）のpast ~ の用法と同じ。

 

『山菜が伸びすぎる』

伸びすぎるということは、大きくなるということで、big を使い

・plants get /become big.

・Plants get /become too big. 

   grow を使い

・Plants grow big / too big. 

・Plants grow too much. も可。

 

『食べ頃を過ぎる』

食べ頃を過ぎるということは、どういうことか。

結果から考えたら、食べ頃を過ぎたものを食べたら、当然、おいしくない。よって

・The edible plants are not delicious /tasty /good. （おいしくない）

・They don't taste good. （おいしくない）

・They don't have a good taste. 　（おいしくない）

・ They have a bad taste. （マズイ）

・They taste bad. （マズイ）

美味しいというと、～　is good taste と言う人がいるが、何かがおいしい、という時は、例えばカレーがおいしいのならば、have を使って、This curry has a good taste. となる。　ちなみに、good taste というと、She has good taste in music/clothes.（a が無い）  となると、音楽や服の『センス、趣味』の意味となる。

 

他にも、マズイということは、食べられないということなので、

・You can't eat them. 

『旬を逃すと、山菜も伸び過ぎて、食べ頃を過ぎてしまう』

少し言葉を補いつつ、まとめると、

・ If you want to go and collect edible wild plants, don't be late! When they get too big, they don't taste so good.

・If you want to find good edible plants in the mountains, you need to go there soon enough. If you are late, you just get wild plants that are too big and they won't have a good taste.

旬というとは、正しい時期と考えると、right という語が浮かぶ。

・You need to go and get edible wild plants at the right time. Or the plants grow too big and they may taste bad. 

いずれにしても、日本語を超える意識が必要。日本語にとらわれず、その意味する所を考えること。それによって、簡単な英語で、自分なりに表現できるようになる。何事も練習である。
