２５行目から長文になったけれど、訳本と読み比べて面白い箇所だと思ったので、そのまま書き写した。
見過ごしてしまいそうな文章 [taking a long, dark book from a shelf] だが、long と darkの単語が訳本と自分の感覚とで微妙に異なり興味深く味わえた。
誰もが知っている[long]と[dark]に、どんな日本語を当てはめるだろうか？
そしてどんな本を想像するだろうか？
人は皆十人十色、違う形や色の本をイメージするかもしれない。
英文から日本文を考えたり他人の訳と比較した時、翻訳の難しさと奥深さを感じる。

「復讐」がテーマのように語られる『嵐が丘』だが、第２章で、「復讐をとげない」意味の単語が表現されているのだ。
登場人物の感情や情念など複雑に織りなされる作品の特徴が早くも現れてるのかも知れない。
