The hot bath is three story wooden buildings like the traditional Kyoto-style house called Machiya. Yamagi-yu, Willow Bath house in Japanese is so Kyotoish. The willow bends and lets the wind pass through and occasionally lets he heavy snow go down. So the bath house allow itself to bend like a willow in the face of adversity so that it will not break and it can survive in natural stance. It’s Kyotoish.

京都銭湯の「柳湯」と「錦湯」はともに京都の中心地にあり、三階建ての木造の町屋造りである。

“Yanagi-yu,” a public bathhouse in Kyoto founded in 1931 (Showa 6), ceased operations in 2021. In April 2024, demolition work began, and it has now been completely dismantled. 

Yanagi-yu was known for its beautiful mosaic tiles inspired by the gardens of Heian Shrine and its charming tile decorations featuring crabs and shells. 

It is also remembered for a story about the singer Takajin Yashiki, who frequented the bathhouse during his student days and fell in love with the daughter of the attendant at the reception desk.

柳湯のご主人はいつも自然体だ、ご主人の親切なお人柄もあり、たいへん気分が良かった。
