You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now.
Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it."
Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled.

But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say.
"My hair grows so fast, Jim !"
And then Della leaped up like a little singed cat and cryed,
"Oh, oh !"
Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present.
She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm.
The dull, precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright and ardent spirit.

Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims --- just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair.
They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession.
And now they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone.

tortoise : カメ　（turtle はウミガメ）
with jewelled rims : ふちに宝石をちりばめた
just the ～ vanished hair : 彼女の美しかった今はなき髪に挿すにはちょうどピッタリの色合い
vanish : 消える、なくなる
had simply craved and yearned over ～ : ～をただ心から欲しいと思いあこがれていただけだった
possession : 財産、所有
the tresses : 長いおぐし
the craved adornments : あこがれていた飾り
covet : むやみに欲しいと思う
adorn : 飾り立てる

ガラスの密室 （森村誠一）

ブコフで105円にしては面白かった。
日本人の作品は理解しやすい。

三四郎（夏目漱石） read through

310ページを一ヶ月かかって読んだ。
「無意識の偽善」がテーマになっているらしい。
それよりも、明治時代の雰囲気、日本人の生活などが興味深かった。
「草枕」は内容が高度すぎで挫折したけど、この小説は何とか読破できた。
気力が湧けば、漱石の処女作「吾輩は猫である」もいつの日にか読んでみたい。
