We won’t always understand how God is going to accomplish His plans. All He asks is that we surrender our will to His and trust that He’ll show us the way (Proverbs 3:5-6). Abraham’s willingness to give up what was most precious to him came from his unyielding faith in the Lord’s trustworthiness.

However, if you tell God no because He won’t explain why He wants you to do something, you actually hinder His blessing. But when you say yes to the Lord, He will pour out His goodness and reward your obedience. What matters more than material blessings are the things He is teaching us in our spirit. Obeying the Lord naturally positions us to receive what He’s already trying to give us. But when we fail to trust Him and refuse to do what He says, we’re the ones choosing to close ourselves off from some of the good God would have accomplished in our life.

What has the Lord told you to do? Have you only partially cooperated? Or have you, like Abraham, given up your need to understand and obeyed completely?

If God says to give more than you think you’re able to part with, know that He will provide. Whether things are running smoothly or the bottom has dropped out, He is always trustworthy.

In the Gospels, we witness the extraordinary healing power of Jesus. Countless individuals, burdened by physical, emotional, and spiritual afflictions, found solace in His touch. Jesus brought physical healing to those suffering from various ailments and fulfilled the prophetic words spoken by Isaiah, demonstrating His role as the ultimate Healer. As we meditate on Matthew 8:17, let us marvel at Jesus' ability to carry our illnesses and bear our burdens.

Throughout the pages of the Gospels, we encounter numerous accounts of Jesus reaching out and healing individuals with compassion and love. He cured the leper, restoring his physical health and his place within society. The paralyzed man, confined to his bed, experienced the miracle of walking again at the command of Jesus. The woman with the issue of blood, who had endured years of suffering, found immediate relief by merely touching the hem of Jesus' garment. Jesus' healing power transcended the human body's limitations and spoke to the depths of the human soul.

But Jesus' healing ministry did not stop at physical ailments. He also attended to the emotional and spiritual wounds that afflicted people's hearts. In Proverbs 4:20-22, we are reminded of the importance of guarding our hearts, for they are the wellspring of life. Jesus understood the impact of emotional wounds on a person's well-being and offered His healing touch to mend broken hearts. He listened to the cries of the hurting, comforting them with words of assurance and love. He embraced the outcasts and those rejected by society, showing them that they were seen and valued.

Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah, describing Him as the Suffering Servant who would bear our sorrows and carry our pain (Isaiah 53:4-5). Jesus, in His ministry, fulfilled this prophecy, demonstrating His deep empathy for our suffering. He willingly took the weight of our sins, diseases, and infirmities upon Himself. By His wounds, we are healed.

In Jeremiah 33:6, we read about God's promise to bring healing and restoration to His people. This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the divine Physician who offers healing to the brokenhearted, hope to the despairing, and deliverance to the oppressed. Just as God promised in Exodus 23:25-26 to bless the obedience of His people with health and freedom from disease, Jesus extends His healing touch to all who come to Him in faith.

Let us approach Him with expectant hearts, laying our physical, emotional, and spiritual burdens at His feet, knowing He is the ultimate Healer who tenderly cares for His children.

You can please God. It is amazing when you really think about it: human beings – seemingly so insignificant when we look at the size and scale of the universe that God has created – have the ability to please the Lord. It is also possible to ‘displease’ the Lord (Isaiah 66:4c). The apostle Paul wrote, ‘Find out what *pleases the Lord*’ (Ephesians 5:10), or as *The Message* translation puts it, ‘Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.’

Praise is the appropriate response to God. He is worthy of all your praise. We teach our children to be thankful – not for our own sake but for theirs. We are pleased when they are thankful. God teaches you to praise him because it is the right response to him, and because it is good for you. Thanksgiving is an appropriate response to human generosity. Continual praise is the appropriate response to God’s generosity.

The psalmist repeats over and over again that you should ‘praise the Lord’ (v.1). Praise him all day long: ‘From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets’ (v.3). Praise him throughout your life, ‘now and tomorrow and always’ (v.2, MSG). Praise him particularly for his love for the marginalised: the poor, the needy and the barren (vv.7–9).

As Christians, we are called to be a community whose conduct shines as a beacon to others, illuminating the way that God intended life to be lived.

Paul wrote that you are ‘light in the Lord’ (v.8). Therefore, you should live as ‘children of light’ (v.8). Light produces good fruit: goodness (generosity towards others), righteousness (doing right in relation to God and humanity) and truth. These are ways you can please the Lord (v.10).

Light exposes evil. The best way to get rid of evil is to drag it into the light. Evil thrives in the darkness, but the moment you bring it into the light, its power diminishes.

Ask God to shine the light of the Holy Spirit into your heart. If the Holy Spirit exposes an area of darkness, deal with it through confession and repentance. The moment you do so, the power of evil is broken.

Make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15–17)

時間はあなたの最も貴重な財産です。お金はもっと手に入りますが、時間はもっと手に入りません。

Time is your most valuable possession. You can get more money but you cannot get more time. Paul wrote, ‘Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil’ (vv.15–16). Do not fritter away your life, like a fool. Life is short – live in the moment and make the most of every day.

Paul contrasts the escapism of substance abuse (getting ‘drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery’) with being ‘filled’ (v.18) with the Holy Spirit: ‘Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him’ (v.18, MSG). In these verses, he uses ‘filled’ in the present continuous tense, urging us to go on and on being filled with the Spirit.

Being filled with the Spirit leads to singing ‘psalms, hymns and spiritual songs’ (v.19) instead of ‘drinking songs!’ (v.19, MSG). It leads you to worship the Lord Jesus in your heart and to give thanks to God – the very opposite of grumbling and complaining. It is characteristic of the Spirit-filled community to be grateful to God for all things, in all places and at all times. It also leads to mutual submission as we see in the next section.

John Paul Getty, once the wealthiest man on the planet, who was married three times, said, ‘I would gladly give all of my millions for just one lasting marital success.’ Mutual respect is the key to a happy marriage. The vital words in verses 21–33 are ‘respect’, ‘love’ and ‘submit’. The overall heading for this section is that ‘out of respect for Christ’ (v.21, MSG), we are to ‘submit to one another’ (v.21).

The word used for submission is different from the word used for ‘obey’ (6:1). Submission is voluntarily yielding in love. It is a beautiful characteristic and it is clear from the overall heading, ‘submit to one another’ (5:21), that Paul expects mutual submission. This teaching would have been a revolutionary concept in first-century culture.

Respect is the key to a good relationship between the sexes. We are not at war. As Pope Benedict put it, ‘In Christ, the rivalry, enmity and violence can be overcome and has been overcome. It is respect throughout marriage that elevates the other and gives them the dignity and increases their confidence and self worth.’

The overall emphasis of the passage is on love. Although it is directed particularly at the husband, it would be absurd to suggest that the love is not mutual. Paul is saying that both love and submission are mutual. Love is self-giving; this is how a husband submits.

Isaiah encouraged the people: ‘Be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create’ (65:18). God promises that he will create ‘new heavens and a new earth’ (v.17).

This new heaven and new earth will finally be a place where everything pleases God, where he can ‘delight in [his] people’ (v.19). In these final chapters, Isaiah sketches out a glorious vision of what this new creation will be like.

This passage also warns of the coming judgment, as all that displeases God is excluded from this new creation (66:4b).

Isaiah promises that everyone will reach their full potential (Isaiah 65:20). But the New Testament goes even further, with Jesus promising eternal life. There will be no need for funerals, undertakers or cemeteries. God’s people will be given immortality (1 Corinthians 15:53).

There will be harmony and peace (v.25). All relationships will be restored – including even the animal world. There will be unity and intimacy in all our relationships. Nature will be restored as a place of stability, safety and peace. The kingdom of God will be fully established. Martin Luther wrote, ‘I would not give up one moment of Heaven for all the joys and riches of the world, even if they lasted for thousands and thousands of years.’

Lord, may this wonderful promise of a new heaven and a new earth spur me on in my desire to live now in the ways that please you.

Say “Yes” to What Matters

Peter sat in grief and darkness. He had publicly denied knowing Jesus just before Jesus was crucified. And for a couple of days, Peter had to process his guilt without expecting it to go away. But on the third day, Jesus’ tomb was found empty and the stone rolled away.

Not long afterward though, Peter was out in a boat with several other disciples doing what he was trained to do before he met Jesus: fishing.

It’s as he’s doing this that Jesus appears. But instead of letting Peter continue to live with the shame of his past, Jesus pulls him aside and asks him a question that propels Peter into his purpose:

“Do you love me?”

Three times Jesus asks Peter this—one for each time Peter denied him. This wasn’t a passive-aggressive question: Jesus was inviting Peter to reaffirm the relationship he’d previously denied.

Every time Peter responds with, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you,” Jesus re-commissions Peter by calling him into the role of church builder and shepherd.

Jesus’ resurrection meant that Peter didn’t have to be defined by his mistakes. He could still embrace the call on his life and become the leader Jesus knew he could be.

Like Peter, you also have the opportunity to say “yes” to loving Jesus and being loved by Him. No matter how dysfunctional your life looks, or how far from Jesus you feel, there is nothing that can separate you from His love.

Your past mistakes or current problems do not dictate your purpose when your life is rooted in Christ.

God has given each of us access to a free gift we don’t deserve: a free gift that is available when we choose to love God and receive His relentless, sacrificial love for us.

The resurrection reassures us that no situation or mistake is impossible for God to redeem. There is no fear Jesus cannot conquer and no life He cannot heal. No darkness can stand against the power of the risen God who conquered death on our behalf.

There is nothing our God can’t do, and no one our God can’t redeem.

Today, say “yes” to Jesus and allow Him to reveal His deep, unending love for you.

The first step you need to take is to look back at every difficult situation that you have experienced and make a choice to forgive everyone who was involved. This choice is your first step toward being able to pray the most powerful prayer on earth and to begin to reap a new crop of blessings in your life.

As you go down your list, pray carefully over each name. Remind yourself what it was that they did to you, and then pray something like this:

You can do this after each prayer of forgiveness, or you can say it at the end after you have prayed through your list. Whichever way you choose, pray something like this:

If at various times of your life you have blamed God for things that you now know were not His responsibility, you will want to tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to forgive you. You can use words like these:

I am sorry, God, for blaming You for the bad things that have happened in my life. I now know You did not want these things to happen. Please forgive me.

Step 6: Pray the Most Powerful Prayer on Earth

I said earlier that forgiveness is an act of love, not of justice. When Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34), there was no sin, unforgiveness, resentment, bitterness, or ungodly anger in His heart. He was free to be able to pray this most amazing prayer with a pure heart even in the midst of His own pain.

Step 7: Pray that Jesus Will Forgive Them

The final stage in offering forgiveness to others is to pray as Jesus did. Pray that those who have hurt you will be forgiven for everything they have done. When you forgive, God will release healing into the consequences of your past and will work miracles that will transform every area of your life.

Even when it seems impossible, you will be able to forgive with God’s help. Ask Jesus to give you His love for all those who have hurt you. Pray “Father, forgive them.” Let it become the most powerful prayer on earth for you as well.
