TOKYO -- Japan's capital recorded 180 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Nov. 16, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced.
The new infections came after 255 cases were reported on Nov. 15 and 352 on Nov. 14. Reported case numbers typically dip on Mondays following low testing figures over the weekend, especially on Sundays.
In the first week of November, Tokyo averaged 191.3 new infections per day, rising to 292.6 in the second week. This is up from the average for October, which saw a total of 5,358 infections for an average of 172.8 per day. In September there were 4,921 cases of the virus, or an average of about 164 per day. The city recorded a monthly high of 8,126 new infections in August -- about 262 cases per day on average.
Tokyo has recorded almost/over 35,000 infections since the start of the pandemic, more than any other prefecture in Japan, with an overall death toll of 470 as of Nov. 15. There were 38 patients hospitalized in Tokyo with severe COVID-19 symptoms as of Nov. 15.
It is the first time in 7 days since the 9th of this month that the number of infected
people per day has fallen below 200.
