いただいた年賀状Various New Year’s cards

毎年１７０通ほどの年賀状をいただくのですが
最近はやはりパソコンで作ったものが多いようです。

パソコン制作の場合はどの葉書も非常に仕上がりが
綺麗なので　逆に皆同じ様に見えてしまうのが残念です。

パソコンソフトのひな型やサンプルを使わずに
独自の創作やユニークなアイデアで仕上げたものが
やはり強く印象に残りました。

その中からごく一部をご紹介します。
I receive about 170 New Year’s cards every year.
Many people make them utilizing computers these days.
The finish is beautiful, however, they sometimes look in the same way.
But there are some impressive cards in them, which are made by the creators’ own ideas without software templates.
Let me introduce two of them.


どちらもデザイン・グラフィック系の専門の方です。
パソコンを使ってプリントアウトしていますが
さすがにクオリティーの高さを感じます。
Both are works by specialists related to graphics or designs.
Printed through PCs, each shows its excellent quality.

次のは小学校４年生のゴム版です。
The next work is a rubber plate Hanga by a girl in the 4th grade.


楽しそうに作っている感じが　いいですね。
微笑ましくて　見ている方も元気が出てくるようです。
Her pleasant feeling cheers us up.

次は版画のプロの方の葉書です。
The followings are cards by pros.


木版画　官製はがきに直に刷ってあります。
鋭い刀の使い方はもちろん　力強い絵はすごいです。

どちらも銅版画　版画専用の紙に刷ってあります。
左はメゾチィント　右は１版多色刷りの銅版

年賀状はともすると　めんどくさいものの
代表のように言われがちですが
年に一回の「創作を楽しむチャンス」でもありますので
私としては多いに勧めたいところです。

Making New Year’s cards is kind of tiresome.
But it is once in a year opportunity, I encourage all of you to enjoy creation.

明けましておめでとうございますA Happy New Year

今年の年賀状のテーマは
「春の海　ひねもす　のたりのたりかな」（蕪村）を
イメージして作りました。
画中の女性はさしずめ「のたり姫」というところでしょうか。

世界各地で悲惨な戦争が絶える事無く起きて
先行きの見透視がつかない不安は
なさけなくも毎年のことのようです。

世界中のすべての人々が　一斉にゆったりと眠れる日
そして一斉に笑える日がいつか来てほしいものです。

では　今年もよろしくお願いいたします。

The theme of this New Year’s card is based on one of Buson’s Haikus.
“Haru no umi hinemosu notari notari kana”
(Spring sea, peaceful all day, a swell of the ocean is…sorry for poor translation)
The girl is as we would say “ Notari (peaceful or leisurely) Princess”

It is a pity that wars prevail here and there in the world and we always
face an uncertain future.
I wish all the people in the world could sleep in peace and laugh in chorus.

「Happy Boat」

Happy Boat 2008年制作　90mmΦ ED 70

この作品は今年の初頭に作ったものです。
２００８年の年賀状の基になった作品でもあります。

今年はいい年になればとの　想いを込めて作ったのですが
どうもその想いとは裏腹な１年であったようです....

しかしながら　個人的には新しいテーマでの
創作を始めて　心中熱い想いで取り組んできた年でもありました。
来年もこの「わくわく」するテーマを結実させるべく
制作に邁進したいとおもいます。

では　皆様にもよいお年でありますように

I made this in the beginning of this year and my new year’s card in ‘08 was based on it.
Although I put my hope for becoming a good year into this work,
it apparently has come in the opposite direction.

However, I’ve personally worked on a new theme of my works enthusiastically this year.
Also next year I’ll advance toward the fruition of this exciting theme.

「猫姫」 Cat Princess

「海姫」・「天姫」つづいて
三人目の姫「猫姫」を制作しました。
The third princess following Sky and Sea Princess.


「猫姫」207×225mm ED 70 2008年制作　Cat Princess

ちょっとファンキーな姫になりました。

この姫は二回目に描いたもので
一回目の姫は一度は刷り上げたのですが　
どうも気に入らなくて　最初の版から作り直しました。
この辺りがタブローと違って　版画はやり直しが面倒です。

内猫ゴミは登場していません。
あの毛並みは色数が多く必要で　表現が難しく
尚かつ　仕上がりの美しさがあまり期待出来ないので描きませんでした.....

暫く小品では姫シリーズを続ける予定ですが
次はどんな姫を登場させるかは　今思案中です。

この作品は下記のギャラリーで扱っております。
（一番新しいのでまだネットに載っていない場合もあります）


It might be a kind of funny Princess.

Actually, I started it from the beginning again.
I didn’t like the first finishing of her face.
So, I had to start all over, which is a difficult point of Hanga compared with Tableau.

Gomi doesn’t appear.
Her coat needs a lot of colors.
Besides, I can’t expect the effect for its “color-consuming” effort.

I’ll keep on making these princess series for time being. What next?

しばらく前に相方が作ったモンブランケーキです。
Gateau Mont Blanc my partner made

栗は近所からいただいて相方がクリームにしたもの。
台のケーキは息子の新潟土産の「八海山パウンドケーキ」.....

栗クリームと日本酒八海山が染み込んだケーキの組み合わせ！
どんな味か想像できます？

なまクリームの味の後に日本酒の味が口の中に広がります。
私は声が出ませんでしたね....
不味い！とまではいかないのですが.....　妙な味でした....
A neighbor gave us a lot of marrons and my partner made them marron cream.
This sponge cake, which is my son’s souvenir from Niigata tastes” Sake”
Can you imagine the combination of marron cream and Sake?
Taste of sake accompanies marron cream.
I’d say..it’s somewhat strange taste.

ハクを付ける話 １１ Applying Leaf 11

今日は箔のお話の最終回です。
This is the final story of leaf.


これは「飛鳥箔」と言う　やはり銀箔をベースに着色加工したものです。
糸の様な模様は実際の藁を置いて色を着けているそうです。

私としては使い易いおとなしい柄でしたので　結構作品に使っていました。

しかし　１０年程前に生産中止となり　今はまったく見かけることはありません。
This leaf is processed and colored silver leaf named Asuka leaf.
Thread like lines are the traces of real straws scattered on the leaf at its coloring.
It was not so loud that I sometimes used it in my works.
However, it was discontinued ten years ago. I’ve never seen it anymore.




この箔は「親和箔」シリーズの内の一つです。
シリーズと言うくらいですので３０色以上の種類が市販されています。

やはり銀箔をベースに樹脂系の塗料を焼き付けているようです。

105×110mm　１０枚で１０００円位
This is one included in “Shinwa-leaf” series, which have more than 30 colors on sale.
It is made by burning resin paint into the surface of silver leaf.
The price is 1000yen for 10sheets (105x100mm)




これは親和箔の中に入れられていた「品質保証書」です。
１０年程前に購入したのですが　
保証書の日付が「昭和１３年」と言うのが驚きです。
（今はもう入ってないかもしれません）

色数がたくさん揃っているので　数点の作品に使ってみたのですが
保証書のようには堅牢ではなく　保護クリアーをかけても
塗られている塗料が数年で変色していまいました.....

この箔は作品に使用するのは特に「要注意」ですね。


箔という素材は確かに魅力ではありますが
金箔以外は劣化・退色・変色等があって
へたに使用すると作品の信用を落とすこともあります。

これから箔を使ってみようと思われる方は　充分注意する必要があります。

以上で「ハクを付ける話」は終了ですが
今までの私のお話しが　これから制作される方の参考になればいいのですが。

This is the warranty card for the leaf I bought ten years ago.
Surprisingly, the written date is in the year 1938!!
As there are various colors in this series, I tried using some.
In spite of the warranty, they were not so fast that coating was in vain and colors faded away in a few years' time.
They need care, when you use them on your works.
Although leaf is interesting and fascinating as an ingredient, except gold one, it has possibility of deterioration, which can affect the credit of your works.
If you try to use leaf, please take great care.
I hope this story will be of help even a little for would –be users of leaf.

ハクを付ける話 １０ Applying Leaf 10

私が作品に一番多く使う赤貝箔と青貝箔のお話を続けましたが
他にも変わった「加工箔」がありますので　紹介します。
Today I’ll introduce rare processed silver leaf.




虹彩箔中色 （こうさいはく　ちゅうしょく）
Kosai(Iris?)-leaf Chu-shoku(color)


虹彩箔青竹
Kosai-leaf Fresh green bamboo-color


虹彩箔淡色
Kosai-leaf light color

上記３点とも　110×105mm　100枚梱包で１６、０００円前後　

銀箔をベースに「墨流し」のような模様を浮き出させた加工箔です。
（どのような方法で作るのか今だに良く判りません。お店の方に伺っても明確な説明は得られませんでした）

箔はそれ自体　非常に強い雰囲気をもっていますが
虹彩箔は他以上に自己主張の激しい箔なので
作品に使用するのはかなり難しい箔です。

ともすると絵が負けて箔だけが目立つバランスの悪い作品になってしまいます。

箔の主張に負けない絵にすることが　私の長い間の課題でした。

The price is about 16,000yen for 100sheets each (110x105mm)
Each leaf is made by processing silver one and looks like marbling.
I asked a craft man how to make it, but the explanation seemed a little vague.

Leaf has strong characteristics itself, above all Kosai-leaf.
It is too outstanding to use effectively. The leaf can defeat the picture.
Balancing between my picture and leaf has been a long time challenge.

ハクを付ける話 ９ Applying Leaf 9

赤貝箔や青貝箔は　角度や光によって玉虫のように色が変化します。
そこが大きな魅力なんですが.....

この様な箔にクリアーインクをかけますと
光の乱反射が抑えられて単一な色に変わってしまいます。
The color of Red shell leaf or Blue shell leaf changes iridescently according to angles
or lights, which is a big charm of leaf.
If you put transparent ink for protection on it, the diffusion is curbed and its color
turns into a single one.

色の美しさを取るか　いつまでも退色しない作品にするか
長い間悩みました....
I’ve long been torn between choosing the beauty of color and choosing stability.


全面にクリアーをかけた「Moon Duo」のUP
“ Moon Duo” coated with transparent ink


しかし　せっかく買っていただいた作品が劣化するのは
作家としては心苦しく申し訳ないことですので
いつまでも退色・劣化のしないよう保護クリアーを使う事にしました。

「September Moon」以降の作品はすべて３層のクリアーインクをかけています。

下地のインクと保護クリアーで挟む事によって
空気や湿度から遮断して退化を防いでいます。

この赤貝と青貝の玉虫系の箔以外は　クリアーをかけても色の変化はありません。

After all I decided to protect them to keep stable, because I don’t want the purchasers
to be troubled with deterioration of the work.
After “ September Moon”, I’ve put three-layered coating on the prints.
Sandwiched between base and the three-layered ink, leaf is shut off air and moisture
and prevented from deterioration.
The leaf except Red and Blue shell leaf doesn’t change its color even though coated with
protecting ink.

ハクを付ける話 ８ Applying Leaf 8

今日からまた箔のお話を再開します。

箔の劣化・退色とはどのような状態になるのか.....

以前紹介しました「September Moon」を例にお話しします。
I’ll continue my leaf story.
What is deterioration or discoloration like?
Taking ＜September Moon＞ for example, let me explain a little.




臙脂（えんじ）色の部分が赤貝箔の生地むき出しの状態です。

４年前に刷り増した時のシートですが　
まだ充分に赤貝箔の色の美しさが保たれています。

しかし　同じ時に刷ったシートでも
この様に著しく劣化してしまうシートもあります。
Red shell leaf is applied without coating in the red part.
I reprinted this four years ago.
The beautiful color of leaf is still fully kept.

However, this is a sheet printed at the same time.
Some prints are badly deteriorated like this.


金属が酸化して錆びた様です。

同じ時に　同じ状況で刷るのですが　
中にはこんなに変化してしまうものが出てきます。

大丈夫なシートと　そうでないシートが４年で出てきてしまう....
保存状態も同じなので　原因はまったく解りません。

この作品に関しては
逆にいつまでも箔に変化の見られないシートもあって
その様な作品を選択して市場に出してきました。

むき出しの箔の不安定さに目をつぶり
箔本来の色の美しさをとるか
あるいは　色を諦めてクリアーをかけ　安定した変化の無い作品にするか
非常に悩ましいところです。

クリアーインクを刷り込むと箔の本来の色が著しく落ちてしまいます。
その辺りのお話は次回で
It looks oxidized and rusty.
Although I printed them at the same time under the same conditions,
the results are not the same.
What made such a difference after only four year’s time in the same storage?
I have no idea….

Regarding this work, there were many unchanged prints, so I picked good ones
and put them on sale.
Ignoring the instability without protection, should I choose the beauty of leaf itself
or giving up the color with protecting agent, should I choose the stability of prints?


To do or not to do… That is the question.

Applying protecting agent, the color leaf originally has extremely changes.
About this, the next time.

久し振りにNORIKO先生から「札幌の秋」の画像が届きました。
澄んだ空気まで感じられるようです。

ハクを付ける話 ７ Applying Leaf 7

この作品は１５年程前に赤貝箔と青貝箔を使って制作したものです。
表面に保護クリアーをかけずに　箔の生地をそのまま活かしたので
箔の色の美しさが良く出た作品になりました。

しかし.....　このまま箔をむき出しの状態にしておくと
色が変色・退化してしまうので　結局発表せず廃棄してしまいました。

娘をモデルに使った　自分でも気に入っていた作品なので残念でなりません。

これ以前に2点同じ様な箔生地むき出しの作品を作ったのですが
その時はまだ箔の劣化を甘く見ていたため市場へ出してしまいました。

その内の１点はオーストラリアのサウスウェールズ州立美術館に収蔵されています。
今頃どんな状態になっているか想像するのが怖いです.....

美術館の収蔵環境はいいのでかなり原型を維持しているのではと　期待しているのですが....

これ以降　箔の効果を活かしつつ　
なおかつ　劣化をも食い止める方法を求めて頭を悩ませつづける事になります。

I used Red shell leaf and Blue shell leaf for this work 15 years ago.
I didn’t put protecting agent on the surface to make use of leaf itself,
so, the beautiful colors of leaf worked very much.
However, as the leaf without coating eventually becomes discolored,
I gave up showing and disposed of it.
It is a shame because my daughter was the model for these little girls.

Before then I produced two prints with leaf without coating.
I underestimated the problem of discoloration then, and I put them on the market.
One of them is now housed in the South Wales Museum in Australia.
It’s frightening to imagine what’s become of it.
But I wish it were maintained as it was, because the circumstances of museums are ordinarily excellent for keeping their collections.
After that, I’ve been struggling to find a preventive against deterioration as well as
to make the most what leaf has.

ハクを付ける話 ６ Applying Leaf 6

今回は銀箔をベースに様々な加工を施した「加工箔」を紹介します。
This time, I’ll introduce different kinds of processed silver leaf.


赤貝箔
127mm角（４寸２分）
厚みは銀箔と同じ位
１００枚で約７０００円
Red shell leaf, thickness is the same as silver one,7000yen for 100sheets.




青貝箔
内容は赤貝箔と同じ
Blue shell leaf, contents are the same as Red one.
若い頃見て　是非作品に使ってみようと決心した箔がこの２種類の箔でした。
今でもこの赤貝と青貝を一番多く作品に用いています。

When I was young I was determined to use these two kinds of leaf for the future.
I use the two most still now.


銀箔を硫化ガスで燻蒸して　まず出来るのが「中金箔」です。
それをもっと長く燻蒸して出来るのが「赤貝箔」
さらに燻蒸しつづけると「青貝箔」になるそうです。

そしてもっともっと燻蒸をつづけると
While silver leaf is fumigated in sulfidizing gas, Chu-gold leaf is made first.
After further fumigation, it becomes Red shell leaf and then Blue one follows.
If it is fumigated much longer…


「黒箔」になります。
１００枚で約１０，０００円前後と思います。

この黒箔は非常にもろくて　竹ピンセットでつまんでも
ぽろぽろ崩れて扱いにくい箔です。
まだ作品に使った事はありません。

It becomes Black leaf.Perhaps around 10000yen for 100sheets.
This is too fragile to handle.
When you pick it even with bamboo tweezers, it’ll ruin easily.
I haven’t used it on my works yet.

ゼラニュウム

相方が育てている数少ない花のひとつです。
要するに手がかからず　面倒な世話がいらない花です。
年中咲いているのでありがたみの無い花です。

ハクを付ける話 ５Applying Leaf 5

金箔の次はやはり銀箔ですね。
Now I’m going on silver leaf.

127mm角（４寸２分）a 127mm-square
厚みは金箔よりやや厚いです。a little thicker than gold leaf
１００枚で現在約４０００円前後4000yen for 100sheets

銀箔は（金箔以外のほとんどの箔に言えるのですが）
時間と共に変色して黒ずんできます。

保護剤等を塗って変色の進み具合を遅らせる事はできますが
箔の退化を完全に防ぐことは難しいようです。

Silver leaf fades and blackens as time passes and so do most other kinds of leaf
except gold one.
It is possible to retard fading to some extent by protecting agent, but not perfectly.

しかし輝きは減っても退化がかなり遅いか　目立たない箔もあります。

Some leaf is inconspicuous for discoloration even though it becomes less shining.


アルミ箔　
127mm角
私の感じでは　金箔の４・５倍位の厚みがあります。
１００枚で２５００円ほど

Aluminum leaf (foil)
A 127mm-square, I feel4-5times as thick as gold one, 2500yen for 100sheets


銀箔と比べるとペカペカした落ち着きの無い輝きが欠点ではありますが
利用する場所によってはアルミ箔の方がいい場合もあると思います。

Compared to silver leaf, its brilliance doesn’t look calm, but it sometimes
gets good results

もうひとつ銀色系の箔で変色退化しないものでは
「プラチナ箔」と言うのがあります。

109mm角（３寸６分）
現在１０枚で７０００円！

残念ながら私のところにはないのでお見せできませんが....

Platinum leaf is not fading either.
A 107mm-square, 7000yen for 10sheets!
I’m afraid I haven’t it at hand.

昨日半年振りにテクテク隊が集まりまして
吉原・千住方面を散策してきました。



まずは遊郭のあった吉原
そこの大門近くの「見返り柳」
現在の吉原もラブホテルやソープランドなど
その系のお店がびっしり立ち並んでいます。
昼間なので「おねぇさん」は見かけませんでした。

その後樋口一葉が遊郭裏で駄菓子屋を開いていた旧居跡や一葉記念館を見て
今回の一番のお楽しみ「土手の伊勢屋」で名物の天丼をいただきました。


ボリュウムたっぷり！
明治２年創業のお店は昔のたたずまいそのままで
味も雰囲気も大変結構でした。

満腹になったところで小塚原刑場跡へ


現在はJR貨物の操作場になっていますが
その下には二十万人！の刑死者が眠っているとの事.....


なんとなくぞくっとする場所です。

ハクを付ける話 ４ Applying Leaf 4

金箔を接着させる素材は　伝統的には「漆」を使う事が多いようです。

以前上野浅草にある金箔貼り加工専門のお店で
作業を見学させてもらった事があります。

「福寿堂」さんと言うそのお店は主に
仏像や仏壇等に金箔を貼る仕事をしていました。

おもしろいところでは　ヤクザさんの事務所に懸ける
「×××組」という様な大きな木製文字看板に金箔を貼っていました。
もちろんすべて純金箔です。
やはり「ハク」を大事にする組関係らしいですね。

もう一つおかしかったのは
箔を貼っているそこの年配の職人さんが
両腕を真っ赤に腫らせて作業していました。
なんでも漆に弱くてかぶれるんだそうです。
ご本人は「もう慣れたから...」と言っていましたが....
どうして箔貼り職人になったのか不思議です....

An ingredient to glue gold leaf is lacquer traditionally.

I’ve once seen the work at a store specializing in processing and applying gold leaf
in Asakusa, Ueno.
The store named “Hukuju-do” mainly applies gold leaf to statues of Buddha or
Buddhist alters.
The funny thing is that craftsmen applied gold leaf on a large wooden doorplate
of a Yakuza (Gangsters) office.
It was PURE gold leaf of course.
No wonder…. it is the HAKU that counts for gang organizations.
(Haku means leaf and also prestige in Japanese)

Another interesting story was that an elderly craftsman was working on leaf- applying
with his arms badly swollen.
I’ve heard he had a low tolerance for lacquer, so got a rash.
“I got used to it” he said, but why did he become a leaf –applying pro ?

シルクスクリーンの場合は「漆」ではなく
樹脂系の「糊」を刷って　箔を１枚１枚貼ってゆきます。


In the case of silkscreen, I use resin adhesive not lacquer.
I print it over my Hanga and apply leaf sheet by sheet.



余談ですが　純金箔の間に挟めてある「合い紙」や
金粒を叩き延ばす時に挟める紙は和紙を使いますが
使い終わったその紙は「油取り紙」として
昔から舞妓さんに重宝されたそうです。
今も京都のお土産として人気があるみたいです。
(うちでは、ゴミ箱から集めて　ガスレンジの油掃除に使ってます。
私にはもう脂がありませんので・・・相方）

As an aside, they use “washi”(traditional Japanese paper) for slip sheets or
gold beating.
The used sheets of washi have been reused for grease-absorbing paper, which were popular among apprentice geishas.
It appears to be a good souvenir from Kyoto now.
(I use them to clean the kitchen stove, as my face hasn’t grease to remove any more ..partner)

断切４号純金箔１００枚の価格は
現在１３０００円から１７０００円位します。
（専門店・画材店によって違いがあります）

制作に使うにはかなり高額です。
純金箔指定注文の場合や
小さな作品などには純金箔を使うこともありますが
私の場合　大作で　なおかつ使用する面が広いので
ちょっと費用がかかり過ぎます。

１点制作ならいいのですが　複数枚刷りますし.....

そこで私は画材としての金箔の効果を得るために
価格の安い「中金箔」を多く使います。
As for #4pure gold leaf, a pack of 100 sheets ranges in price from 13000 to 17000yen,
which depends on stores.
It is too expensive to use for printmaking.
Except an order to use pure one or small prints, I can’t afford the expense of using it
because most of my works are large and so is the leaf-used surface.
If making only one sheet, I manage to do. But I have to print several.
So to get the effect of gold leaf, I use less expensive processed silver leaf named “Chu-gold leaf”



中金箔Chu-gold leaf

「純銀箔」を硫化ガスで薫蒸して作るそうです。
１２７mm角（４寸２分）
厚みは純金箔より少し厚いです。
１００枚梱包で７０００円ほど

この他には「洋金箔」（真鍮箔　銅と亜鉛の化合物）なども使うことがあります。

This ingredient is pure silver, which is fumigated in sulfidizing gas.
It is a 127- mm square and a little thicker than pure gold leaf.
The price is about 7000yen for 100 sheets.
Besides, I sometimes use brass foil or a compound of zinc with copper named
“Western gold leaf"

こちらで今　盛んに咲いている「トランペット」と言われている花です。
「朝鮮あさがお」と言う人もいるようですが　本当の名前は解りません。

金箔の厚さ１万分の１ミリと言っても　ピンとこないかも知れません。
非常に薄いとしか言い様がないのですが....

作業するときは「風」は厳禁　窓を閉め　クーラーも切ります。　
下手をすると鼻息でもフヤフヤっと飛んでしまうか
ぐちゃぐちゃにくっ付いてしまいます。
You may not catch on when you hear thickness of leaf is one- ten thousandth mm.
I can’t find a good word for that but say “extremely thin”
When I apply it on my works avoiding wind is a must.
I must close windows and turn off the air conditioner.
Even though you breathe out through your nose, it can fly out or get crumpled
and then stick to somewhere.



今回のサンプル用に透明アクリルに金箔を貼った状態

直接手で触ると手にくっ付いてしまうので
竹製のピンセットを使います。
金属ピンセットは静電気が起きて箔が絡まってしまうので使えません。

どれくらい薄いかと言うと

To avoid sticking, you shouldn’t touch it with fingers but with tweezers made of bamboo.
Metallic tweezers are unusable due to generating static and leaf clings to them.

Let you know how thin it is.




上記の透明アクリルの箔をライトの光を通して見たものです。
透けて見えるくらい薄くても
青く見えるところはやはり金属っぽいですね。

中心から放射状に走る跡は極く小さな金粒を置いて
打ち延ばしたために出来た痕跡です。

金箔を貼った多くの製品は１万分の１か２ミリを使用しますが
例えば金閣寺のような特殊な場合は
「５倍厚」という厚い箔を用いるようです。

最近では金箔は様々な方面で使われていて
食品はもちろん美容関係にも進出して
クリームやパック剤として使われているようです。

金箔パックをするときらきら・つやつやになるんですかね...

金箔パックをした相方を想像すると　ちょっと怖いですが....

Now, we see the above-mentioned plate through the light
In spite of being extremely thin, it looks bluish, so it looks metallic.
The radiating lines are the trace produced when a grain of gold was hit and expanded.

They usually use one- or two –ten thousandths mm gold leaf for a lot of products.
But in a special case like Kinkaku-ji, the famed Golden Temple, I’ve heard that they use five times as thick as usual leaf ( gold-foil)
These days gold leaf is used in various fields, for example, not only in food but also
in beauty products like cream or face pack.
I wonder if gold leaf actually makes skin shining and lustrous.
Imagine my partner is packing with gold leaf…I’m a bit scared.

ハクを付ける話 １ Applying Leaf 1

私が制作しているシルクスクリーン版画は
重要な素材として「箔」が欠かせません。

今回から暫くその箔についてお話してゆきます。

箔の魅力に取り付かれたのは上京して間もない頃（二十歳頃）
神田の日本画材店「松吉」で数種類の箔を見せてもらったのがきっかけでした。

初めて見る「金箔」「加工箔」（後述）の美しさにすっかり魅了された私は
なんとかしてこの箔を使った作品をいずれ作ってやろうと
その時　心に決めたのでした。

しかしそれを実現するのは　その２０年後まで待たなければなりませんでした。

その辺のお話はもう少し後にすることにして
まず　箔と言えば「金箔」ですのでここから始めます。

Leaf is an essential material for my silkscreen printing.
I’ll talk about it for time being.

It was the day just after coming to Tokyo at age of 20 that I was enchanted by leaf.
I had some types of leaf shown for the first time at Matsuyoshi in Kanda,
which carried Japanese painting materials.

I was so fascinated by a beauty of golden leaf and processed silver leaf that
I determined to use them in my works some day then.

But I couldn’t realize it until 20years had passed since then, which I’ll mention later.
First of all, I 'm starting with “gold leaf”, because speaking of leaf, usually they are referring to ”gold leaf”





黄金色に輝く金箔（黄金色って...　あたりまえですね）Shining gold leaf

純金箔にも数種類の微妙に色合いが異なる箔があるのですが
この金箔は最も一般的な色として市販されている４号箔というものです。
４号箔はどちらかと言うと黄色っぽい方です。

人によって違うでしょうが
「金色」のイメージに最も近いのではないかと私は思います。
１号色はぐっと赤みの強い色になります。

これは純金箔と言っても数パーセントの銀と銅が混じっているので
その割合の程度によって色が変わってくるようです。
（１号箔の方が金の割合が高い　よって値段も高い）

109mm角（３寸６分）　厚さ１万分の１ミリ
１００枚梱包で４号箔は１３，０００円（現在の相場）

There are some different shades of gold in so-cold pure gold leaf.
This is #4 gold leaf which is on sale most generally.
Comparatively speaking, this leaf is rather yellowish.
It may depend on a person, but the#4 is the closest image of gold, I think.
For example, #1 is pretty reddish in color.
Even though they say “pure gold leaf”, a few percent of silver and copper are mixed in it.
So, the colors appear to change according to the rate of mixture.
(#1 has higher gold content than others, so more expensive)

a 109mm square, oneーten thousandth mm thin
#4 leaf is 13.000 yen for 100sheets now
