蝕まれる版画家 ４ Undermined Hanga Artist (4)

ハンガリーのクリスマス用テーブルクロス　
（今回の話題とかなりかけ離れた画像ですが）

腐蝕液は今ではほとんどの作家が　有毒なガスも出ず　火傷もしない
第２塩化鉄を使用しているので　液による危険は随分軽減されたと思います。

しかし問題はまだあります。
「銅の粉」です。
プレートマークを削る時　腐蝕面をスクレーパーで削る等の度に
非常に細かい銅粉が飛び散ります。
ある日アトリエの窓の陽に浮かび上がった　キラキラ光りながら舞っている
銅粉の量の多さにぞっとしたことがあります。
マスクなど付けずに作業していたのでかなりの粉を吸い込んでいたと思います。

このまま　体内に溜まり続けたら.....
もしも　体内で緑青にでも変化したら.....
銅版を削って　命も削る........　恐！

しかも　銅版にはまだ問題があります......

この話題　来年もつづきます

These days, most of the artists use relatively safe iron dichloride solution,
which doesn’t cause harmful gas or burns.
But there are still problems. One of them is copper powder.

Every time I file copper plates or scrape the corroded face,
really fine copper dust flies off.
Once I saw the dust floating and shining in the sunlight from the window.
A large quantity of it gave me a chill.
Without a protective mask,I must have inhaled it much...
What if it has accumulated in my lungs or somewhere...
Could it be that my lungs became coated with verdigris ?…No Way !

And there is another problem with copper plates.

前回まではスクリーン版画の問題点を上げましたが
今回から銅版画のお話をいたします。
少し専門的になりますがそこは読みとばして下さい。
This time I talk about some problems of Intalio(etching, aquatint etc)

二十年程前　銅版画を制作していた頃　腐蝕液は硝酸を使用していました。
硝酸で銅を腐蝕させると黄色い有毒なガスが発生します。

私の場合大きい版では50×70cm 全面アクアチィント技法（線ではなく面の腐蝕）で
腐蝕を繰り返していましたので　ものすごい量のガスが出ました。
少しでも吸い込むと頭痛がしてきます。
手に着いた硝酸を気づかずにいると　火傷のようにひりひりとして
指紋も薄くなる程です。
今では考えれない程無茶な制作をしていたと思います。

当時から腐蝕液は硝酸より安全な第２塩化鉄に代わりつつありましたが
私は激しく反応して短時間で腐蝕ができる　美しいブルーの硝酸液に
こだわり続けました。

When I worked on Intalio 20years ago, I would use nitric acid solution to corrode copper.
While a copper plate soaked in it, yellow poisonous gas gave off.
Using Aquatint technique(corroding faces not lines) I repeated this corrosion process.
Since I sometimes dealt with a large sized copper plate (50cm x 70cm),
a large amount of the gas emitted.
Even a little inhalation of it gave me a headache.
If nitric acid sticks on my finger without noticing,
it suffers minor burns or its fingerprint becomes thin.
Now I think it was really incautious printmaking.
At that time, safer iron dichloride solution had already been replacing nitric acid
But I persisted in using beautiful blue nitric acid solution, which violently reacted
and corroded in a short time.

現在は個展だけではなくインターネットでも
作品をアピールする時代になりました。
信頼できる画廊サイトでは実際の作品の取引が
増えつつあるようです。

新しい作品の発信方法として魅力的ですが
しかし　影響力・その量・効果はまだ未知数です。
実作品から出る迫力に触れられないのが　一番の問題でしょうか。

作り手と鑑賞する側が納得出来る発表方法が新たに考えられない限り
たとえ自身の思惑と結果の落差が大きくても
個展やグループ展はまだまだこれからも
多くの作家によって開かれてゆくと思います。

いかに多くの人に作品を見てもらうか........
個々の作家の闘争はつづきます。

These days, we expose our works not only in exhibits but also on Internet.
Through the website of credible galleries, deals with art works are increasing.
As a way to send information of new works, it has great appeal to us.
But the influence, the amount and the effect are still unclear.
The number one problem may be that you can’t feel the power
real works bear.
I hope another good way to show the works,
with which artists and audience are both satisfied will be figured out.
Until then, most of the artists will continue to hold solo or group exhibits,
even if there is much of a gap between their expectation and the effect.

In what way we can have more audience....　
Each artist keeps on struggling.

Our cactus flowrs are in full bloom now,
we hardly take a good care of them though.
How admirable they are!

なぜ個展を開くのか

作品が注目される最も効果的な方法は　簡単な例でいうと

・コンクール展や公募展に応募して受賞する
・それが美術雑誌などに掲載される

こういうチャンスに恵まれる作家はそう多くはありません。
「能力と運」に最も厳しく左右される世界です。

しかし　そこを「継続と努力」によって
なんとか作品をアピールしたい　創作を続けたいという
情熱によって　かろうじて「個展形式」が
維持されているのではないでしょうか。

-Why do artists hold a show? -
One of most effective way to attract the attention of the public is
to be awarded prizes in contests or publicly-offered shows
and then art-related magazines or something feature it.

This is the severe world that is greatly affected by “talent and fortune”

Nevertheless, with persistency and effort, they manage to keep on
producing the works that appeal to people

Holding a show is one of the ways that is barely left for artists
with the passion above.

経済的な面から考える

現在　都心で　自費で個展を開くと
会場費６日間で２０~３０万円　
案内状印刷代・切手代・額裝代・搬入出費等合わせると
３０~５０万円程かかるのではないでしょうか。

多くの人を動員し　経費を上回る売り上げが可能な作家は
多くは画廊が企画してくれます。
（経費は画廊が負担してくれますが　売り上げの半分程は
画廊が引き取ります）

経費を差し引いてもなんとかプラスになる作家のケースか
あるいはどうしても多くの人に　多くの自作を見てもらうため
赤字覚悟で　無理して自費で個展を開くケースが多いと思います。

しかし　かかる費用と反響・効果のバランスはかなり厳しいものがあります。

-From an economic aspect-
Holding a show in the center of Tokyo for six days,
you have to pay 200,000 to 300,000yen as a rent for the gallery.
In addition, the expense of invitation cards, their postage,
framing, shipping and so on are needed.
It may add up to 300,000 to 500,000yen.
Artists who have many audiences and whose sales are more than expenses
can mostly get their show produced by galleries.
(In this case, the cost above is on the gallery,
but around a half of sales goes to them)

Artists who manage to stay out of red after withdrawing the cost,
or who strongly want many people to see their works,
even if deficits are produced, hold a show at their own expense.

Striking a balance between the expense and the effect is really difficult.

ようやく落ち着いてきましたので
今日から数回に渡って「個展」について
考えてみようと思います。

最初に銀座で個展を開いた時の私の意気込み・期待感は
相当なものでした。　なにせ　天下の銀座ですから.....

画廊企画でやってもらう程の力量なぞない若造でしたので
もちろん自費です。（２３歳頃）

しかし来てくれたのは　版画仲間の友人が数人
親と親戚が数人　フリーの人が数人........
１日４~５人という日もありました。

夢見た雑誌・新聞に取り上げられることもなく
ただ「個展をしました」という事だけで
反響と効果などまったくありませんでした。

When I held an exhibit at Ginza for the first time,
my enthusiasm and expectation were considerable… at “THE Ginza”…
I was 23years of age.
It was natural that no gallery would produce a show for such a greenhorn.
So, I had to do all at my own expense.
The visitors were several fellow Hanga students, friends, relatives
and several gallery goers.
Sometimes I had only four to five people a day.

The show was not featured in the newspapers or magazines, of course.
There was no response to it at all; therefore it didn’t bring about
the desired effect.

There was just a fact that I held a show left.

個展終了後の処理に追われて更新がだいぶ開いてしまいました。

個展の来場者は６日間延べ約１５０名程　
２１点の作品を買い上げていただきました。

心からお礼申します。

また今回の展覧会を企画していただいた　
ギャラリー間瀬さんにも深く深く感謝いたします。

Taking care of miscellaneous work after the exhibit,
I could hardly update this.

The visitors amounted to the total of roughly 150 for six days.
Twenty one works were bought altogether.
I am grateful to all of you for your support.
And I thank the gallery very much for producing my show.

個展中はお客様とお話することが多くて
ついつい　ブログ用の写真を撮るのを忘れてしまい　ほとんどありません。
普段それほど多くの人と話すことはないので　
かなり緊張していたのかもしれません。
そして　期間中の帰りは連日「飲み会」
(その日の売れた分をその日で飲んでしまったようです！)
Since I always talked with visitors during the show,
I failed to take photos for posting the blog.
I might’ve been tense, because I don’t talk with that many people, ordinarily.
Every evening, after the show- hours, I went to drink with someone.
(The sales for the day apparently were gone due to the drinking session for the night.)

「版画草子」満１周年 The First Anniversary

版画の認識と魅力を理解していただきたく
始めたこのブログも満１周年になりました。
多くの方々に読んでいただいているようで
心から感謝いたします。
（常連の方は約１５０名程になりました）
版画だけでなく　ともするとたわいない　
ゆるいお話ばかり続けたりもしましたが
（そのような話題の方がアクセス数が上がりました......）
NORIKO先生の投稿と素晴らしい画像に助けられながら　
どうにか１日置き掲載を維持する事ができました。
ありがとうございます。

また　私の意味のとりにくい悪文を　時にはメニュウを減らしながら
なんとか英訳してくれた相方にも感謝します。

これからはもっと話題を拡げて　１日置き更新に
こだわらずランダムに掲載してゆこうと思っております。
これからも引き続き　どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

A year has passed since I started this blog in the hope that
many people would know about Hanga and enjoy them.
Thank you very much for visiting.
These days, frequent visitors have increased, up to aprox.150.
There were many times small talks took place of Hanga topics,
when I had more visitors though….
Supported Dentist Noriko’s messages and wonderful photos,
I have managed to maintain every -other-day base posting.
I appreciate her cooperation.
And I thank my partner, who has managed to translate my bad writing
into English, cutting corners on cooking occasionally...
From now on, broadening the topics, I’m going to post in random order.

「水落啓 版画展」ご案内 Invitation to my exhibit

東京では２年振りの個展をお茶の水の
ギャラリー間瀬内「世界観ギャラリー」で開催いたします。

１１月１２日より１７日まで　新作版画３０点前後を展示します。

初日の１２日PM5:30よりささやかですがオープニングパーティを
開きます。わたくしと息子による篠笛の演奏も予定しております。

近くにはニコライ堂など　ちょっとした散策も楽しめますので
是非皆様お出かけ下さい。

会期中は私か相方が会場に詰めています。
気軽にお声をかけてみて下さい。

シルクスクリーン版画の魅力を実際に見て
感じていただければと思います。


It is held at Sekaikan Gallery (inside Mase Gallery) in Ochanomizu, Tokyo
where I had one the year before last.
I’ll mount about 30 of new works there from Nov.12th through 17th.
On 12th, from 5:30 pm, holding a small opening party, my son and I plan to
play the Bamboo Flute there, your visit will be very welcomed.
There is Nicholai-do (Holy Resurrection Cathedral) near the Gallery,
you can enjoy strolling around there.

During the show, my partner or I will be there (may be afternoon),
please talk to us.
I’ll be happy if you enjoy and feel a fascination of the prints
by silk-screen printing.

作品「NIGHT WINDOW (2)」

この作品は前出「MOON ROOM」に引き続いて制作したものです。
形にはなかなか表せない「ゆるやかな風」の表現を
試みた作品です。

今見ますと　この制作当時の私自身が
よほどこの女性のようにゆったりした
時間とか余裕が欲しかったようです。

I produced this work right after"MOON ROOM"
I tried to represent “invisible gentle breeze”
which is difficult to picture.
When I made it, I might‘ve longed for time and room to relax
that this girl has.

作品「Voice of Earth Crimson Sky」

Voice of Earth Crimson Sky　750×500mm ED 20 2007年制作
前回の「Voice of Earth Blue Sky」の姉妹作品です。

今年のノーベル平和賞はゴア氏でした。
米国の事業家もなかなかやるもんだ.....
たいしたもんだ.......と　私は感心していました。
が.......

ゴア氏は議員としても経営者としても
原子力発電・開発の強力な推進者で　
幅広いキャンペーンを展開していること

CO2問題がクローズアップされるにつれ
アメリカでは次々と原子力発電所の建設予定が
出ていること

CO2が温室効果ガスの一つである事は間違いないが
温暖化の主因であるとするのは学者間では
まだ仮説であること

等を読むと　これから地球にとっても
別の「不都合な真実」が出てこなければいいと
思う今日この頃です。


Mr. Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
” An American entrepreneur does pretty well, doesn’t he?”
I had thought so before…

However… I read the followings…
He is one of the nuclear power advocates
and running widely a campaign about it as a politician and
as a business manager.

As the carbon dioxide problem has been highlighted,
construction of nuclear plants has been planned one after another,
in the U.S.

Even carbon dioxide is one of the main greenhouse effect gas,
the theory that
Carbon dioxide is the biggest contribution to global warming
is still controversial among researchers…..etc.

I hope another “Inconvenient Truth “ for our planet won’t come out
in the future.

今立っている地べたをプラネットとして
意識できるようになったのは　やはり宇宙からの
「地球の映像」がもたらしたものと思います。
人類が初めて経験した画期的な視点です。

ほんの薄い皮膜に覆われたその地球は　
美しいけれど　どこかひ弱そうです。
しゃぼん玉のようにすぐ破裂しないか心配です。

そんな地球を思いやる気持ちで描いた作品です。



金木犀　この木も普段はほとんど目立たない木ですが
この時期だけは注目されます。


今回相方が風邪のため英訳はお休みします。
皆さんもお気をつけて

作品「MOON ROOM」

長い間　様式的にも技術的にもかなりの
試行錯誤を繰り返してきました。
中には頭をかかえ込む程の失敗作もあったり......
それでも自然と今の世界へ導く作品が
要所要所で作られてきました。
その中の　私にとっては重要な１点です。

箔の効果が良く出た空間と　人物の心の流れと共に
ゆるやかな時間も感じられるような画面

「物語性と静と動」

私の願っている世界です。


I’ve repeated of the process of trial and error seeking for
my style and technique for years.
I sometimes tore my hair due to a hopeless failure.
But at every key point, I could eventually make some works that led me
to the right way to the present works.
This「MOON ROOM」 is one of such epoch making works for me.
The space where silver leaves become fully effective…
The time that passes slowly along with the girl’s mind…
I’d be happy if you’d feel such space and time in this image.
In other words, “ narrativity, stillness and motion” ..
That’s what I want to represent in my image.

６日は「テクテク歩き隊」で東京の下町　本所・深川を
巡ってきました。

The fifth "Teck Teck Walking Club" seeking for good old Tokyo.
We explored Honjo,Hukagawa district, this time.

討ち入りのあった吉良邸跡です。
そのすぐそばに今話題の時津風部屋があります。


部屋付き親方らしき人をマスコミが追っかけてます。
我々４人も部屋の前で記念写真を撮りました（超ミーハー！）


深川閻魔堂　嘘つきはいけません。


深川八幡宮　
心地よい秋日和　柳橋から本所・深川までおよそ１０km　
藤沢周平・池波正太郎・山本一力などの時代小説に出てくる町並みを
古地図片手に歩きました。
お昼は「深川めし」をいただいたのですが　食べるのに夢中で
写真を撮るのを忘れてしまいました。

作品 「十五夜 Wishing」

十五夜　120mmφ ED 70 2007年制作

昨日は「中秋の名月」　本当の十五夜は２７日だそうですが。
この日のためにこの作品を今まで取って置きました。
アメリカでは「Wishing」という題が付けられています。
いいネーミングと思います。

Yesterday, we enjoyed the harvest moon,
which will be the full moon tomorrow.
I’ve put this work aside for today.
In America, this is called “Wishing”.
I like this title.

お月見にちなんでこんな演出をしてみました。
Prepared for moon viewing teas.

お菓子は地元「十万石ふくさや」のお月見まんじゅう（この日１日限定販売）
左下は蓮の実の甘納豆　　お皿は青森の金山焼

Special bean-paste buns featuring Japanese silver grass and a rabbit
for moon viewing.
These sweets were made and sold in a confectionary in our town
only one day.

At lower left, sugared lotus nuts.
The plate is Kanayama-ware in Aomori pref.

この備前風のお皿　すっかり気に入りまして　
我が家のマイブーム　いろいろ使っています。（200mm角）


普通のおつまみも豪華になります。

作品 「MOON FAIRIES」

煙たい話がつづきましたので　今回は作品解説です。


MOON FAIRIES 800×530mm ED 30 1999年制作

私の制作の基本は簡単にいうと
「物語を予感させる」画面作りです。
それも見る人が共感出来る物語でなければなりません。
共感できる物語へ導くための方法の１つとして
奥行きと広がりのある「ステージ」（普遍性）の中に
「動き」（同時代性）を入れる事によって
「始まりの予感」を画面に定着させようと努力しています。

あたかも　幕が上がった瞬間の舞台のように........

「予感」をきっかけに　後の物語は見ている人に
紡いでいただければと思っています。

Simply put, my fundamentals of Hanga producing are to make an image
that makes you foresee a story.
Besides, the story must be what the audience sympathize with.
One way to lead them into the story is to make a stage
with spatial depth and extent　and to put movement on it.
It may be possible to translate “stage” into “universality”
and “movement” into “now”
Thereby, I try to represent my image as a feeling something begins,
like the moment when the curtain in a theater is going up.
I‘d be glad if this feeling could inspire you
to gather the threads of your story.


今日は久し振りに散歩に出てみました。３ヶ月振りです。
もう秋が来ていました。
Today,I took a walk for the first time in three months.
Fall has already arrived.

彼岸花（曼珠沙華）　奥の門は泉福寺さんです。

この辺り　戦国期には北条・武田・上杉らの武者たちが
覇権を争って駆け巡ったと思われます。
