The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in Gaza for the first time. The breakthrough came after the United States abstained from the vote, after vetoing previous efforts over the last five months. The resolution also demanded the immediate release of all hostages still held by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that committed the October 7 terror attacks against Israel.

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza - after months of failed attempts. Nearly six months of Israel's war on Gaza has left more than 32,300 Palestinians dead. The resolution calls for a ceasefire for the remainder of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends in two weeks time. It also demands the unconditional release of all captives held in Gaza.

“Once famine is declared, it’s too late for too many people,” said the spokesperson for the United Nations humanitarian organisation. Gaza’s 2.3 million people are experiencing acute food shortages. The enclave has been under siege with food supplies largely cut off by Israel since war began in October.
