運命を共有 ～勝利演説より（対訳）

　この国から遠く離れたところで今夜を見つめているみなさん。外国の議会や宮殿で見ているみなさん、忘れ去られた世界の片隅でひとつのラジオの周りに身を寄せ合っているみなさん、私たちの物語はそれぞれ異なります。けれども私たちは皆、運命を共有しているのです。アメリカのリーダーシップはもうすぐ、新たな夜明けを迎えます。And all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared; and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

　この世界を破壊しようとする者たちに告げる。To those who would tear the world down.　私たちはお前たちを打ち破る。We will defeat you.

　平和と安全を求める人たちにお伝えします。To those who seek peace and security.　私たちはみなさんを支援します。We support you.

　そしてアメリカと言う希望の灯はかつてのように輝いているのかと、それを疑っていたすべての人たちに告げます。私たちは今夜この夜、再び証明しました。この国の力とは、もてる武器の威力からくるのでもなく、もてる富の巨大さからくるのでもありません。この国の力とは、民主主義、自由、機会、そして不屈の希望という私たちの理想がおのずと内包する、その揺るぎない力を源にしているのだと。And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright, tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

　アメリカよ、私たちはこんなにも遠くまで歩んできました。America, we have come so far.　こんなにもたくさんのことを見てきました。We have seen so much.　しかしまだまだ、やらなくてはならないことはたくさんあります。But there is so much more to do.　だから今夜この夜、自分自身に問いかけましょう。もし自分の子どもたちが次の世紀を目にするまで生きられたとしたら。もし私の娘たちが幸運にも、アン・ニクソン・クーパーさんと同じくらい長く生きられたとしたら。娘たちが見るどんな機会があるのでしょう？私たちはそれまでにどれだけ進歩できるのでしょうか？So tonight, let us ask ourselves, if our children should live to see the next century, if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see?　What progress will we have made?

　その問いかけに答える機会を今、私たちは手にしました。This is our chance to answer that call.　今この時こそが、私たちの瞬間です。This is our moment.　今こそ、私たちは人々が職に戻り、子どもたちのために機会の扉を開く時です。今こそ、繁栄を取り戻し、平和を推進する時です。今この時にこそ、アメリカの夢を取り戻し、基本的な真理を再確認する時です。おおぜいの中にあって、私たちはひとつなのだと。息をしている限り、私たちは希望をもち続けるのだと。This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope.

　そして疑り深く悲観し否定する声に対しては、そんなことできないという人たちに対しては、ひとつの人間の魂を端的に象徴するあの不朽の信条でもって、必ずやこう答えましょう。And where we are met with cynicism and doubt and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.
