【ワシントン＝船越翔】米宇宙旅行企業ヴァージン・ギャラクティックは１１日、同社が開発した新型宇宙船「スペースシップ２」による有人宇宙飛行に成功したと発表した。宇宙船には同社を設立した英実業家リチャード・ブランソン氏（７０）が初めて搭乗し、高度約８５キロ・メートルまで達した後、地球に帰還した。米国を中心に進む宇宙旅行ビジネスが今後さらに本格化しそうだ。
スペースシップ２は全長約１８メートル。今回の打ち上げは４回目の有人試験飛行で、ブランソン氏や操縦士ら計６人が搭乗した。
スペースシップ２は１１日午前、母船となる航空機に取り付けられた状態で、米ニューメキシコ州の飛行場を出発。高度約１５キロ・メートルの上空で母船から切り離され、垂直に上昇して高度約８５キロ・メートルに達した。乗員が数分間にわたって無重力状態を体験しつつ、地球への帰還に向けて高度を下げ、飛行場への着陸に成功した。
宇宙空間は一般的には、大気がほとんどなくなる高度１００キロ・メートル以上とされるが、米軍や米連邦航空局（ＦＡＡ）は８０キロ・メートル以上と定めており、この基準をクリアした形だ。
同社はさらに２回の有人試験飛行を経て、２０２２年からスペースシップ２を使った宇宙旅行事業を始める予定。これまでに世界中から約６００人が搭乗を予約している。
