8. 砂漠では方向感覚を失いやすい。
→方向感覚を失うとは、今どこにいるのかわからないこと。

方向感覚というと、

という表現がある。方向音痴は

これを応用すると、先の問題は

ある程度英語力のある人は、『方向感覚』と言ったらすぐこのhave a good sense of directionが浮かぶだろう。それは、それでよい。正しい英語である。しかし、A=B 、 リンゴ＝apple
といった、決まりきった英語表現しかでないというのは、悲しくもある。イディオムを言えることは、よいことだが、それを知らなかったらお手上げである。考える英作文では、考えることにより、言われていることの事態、事象を分析して、本質を抽出することにより、表現をシンプル化して、明瞭化した後に、知っている英語（基本的な中学程度の英語）で表現することを期する。イディオムを覚える。それと並行して、それを言えなくても、あり合わせの英語で何とかしのぐ、しぶとい骨のある英語力を身につけることが、英作修行の眼目である。
