A Father’s Grace

God's forgiveness is complete, permanent, and always available.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is a beautiful picture of the grace God showers on us when we repent and turn to Him. In this story, the father has been greatly disrespected by his younger son but continues to wait patiently for him to come home. Finally, as the young man is returning, the father runs to meet him and orders the servants to prepare a feast. His eagerness to celebrate his child’s return exemplifies how God stands ready to receive us when we head toward Him. It also provides a perfect model for how we’re to show grace to the prodigals in our own lives.

This illustration of God’s character underscores Paul’s assertion to the Ephesians: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us” (Ephesians 1:7-8). When we turn to God, He showers His grace on us. He doesn’t forgive our sins begrudgingly or keep a record of our wrongs. He offers complete redemption that leads to new life.

Walking in God’s Love

Walking in God’s love may seem like an easy concept, but at times, it can be very challenging. Loving in a broken world is hard and we won’t get it right all the time. We will make mistakes, and we can still overcome them, but we can’t overcome them alone. With God and his abundant love, we can right our wrongs and bring peace to others. Let’s explore what love is, how we can practice loving others, and why that’s important.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, NIV

As the Bible says in the quote above, love is many things and there are many ways for us to love others. God loves us and wants to be more included in our lives, but we must be the ones to open the door to our hearts and let him in. It may sound easier said than done, but by practicing and putting in effort, by leaning on God’s strength and perseverance, God can transform our hearts.

But in order for us to follow in God’s character and Word, we need to understand that we are called to love. God loves us and wants us to love not only him, but to love others as well. When navigating the world and trying to tackle the many problems and sins within it, it can be testing.

So, what is the opposite of love then? That would be hate.

In life, we will be faced with making hard decisions that will come with consequences, that we may or may not foresee. When facing that fork in the road, having to decide between two options, what do we do?

Oftentimes, the challenge we may be faced with is whether we are to hate or love someone. The path to each may look different from one another. The path that leads to hatred may be the wider and more used road. Whereas the loving path is narrower and less worn down. This can be because it is easier for us to hate than to love. It is easier for us to run away from the problem and not think of it instead of facing it. It is easier to get caught up in the heat of the moment and unleash your frustration.

But it is the wrong thing to do. God calls us to love people, not to hate or judge.

Even if it seems impossible to love the person who is wronging you. We can go to God to help us. Hatred gets us nowhere and solves nothing — all it does is cause more harm to you and the other person involved. By walking in God’s love, we are to disprove the sin, not the person.

We can love others by loving the way Jesus loved us. To walk in God’s love, we can look to the role model and example that Jesus is for us when it comes to loving others. We can look up to him and practice the way he loved others and built a community. As Jesus said, the two greatest commandments are to love God with all we are and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We can follow these commandments to transform ourselves and our hearts to accept God’s love and to spread it to others.

So, what are some practical ways we can love others?

He was about to pass by them, [49] but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, [50] because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Jesus is in control

If you ever get to walk along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, you won’t find many homes. That’s because the Jews have a negative view of water. See, the Hebrew word for water is mayim, which comes from the root word mah meaning chaos. And when you consider some of the stories in the bible, it’s easy to understand why they’re afraid;

- In Genesis, the beginning of creation was a watery chaos to which God brought order.

- Water flooded the earth in the time of Noah.

So, when Jesus “insisted” his disciples cross the Sea of Galilee straight into a huge storm, I believe he was communicating something important to them. And when Jesus rescues them by walking on top of the water, he’s deliberately showing his followers that he is on top of all the chaos in their lives, and in control of every situation.

I love Saturday mornings, but have you ever thought about what it was like on the Saturday after Jesus died? Jesus died on a Friday and rose on Sunday … and that Saturday in between is the only day in 2000+ years when not a single person on earth believed Jesus was alive. That Saturday must have been a dark and lonely one for the disciples. It was the day AFTER their rabbi died, and the day BEFORE his resurrection.

Saturday is the middle part of a three-day story that occurs and reoccurs throughout scripture. From Abraham and Isaac, to Joseph’s brothers, to Rahab, to Esther, to Jesus ... something devastating happens on day one and it’s not until day three that God provides a way out. As author John Ortberg describes it “… Saturday was the day your dream died. You wake up and you’re still alive. You have to go on, but you don’t know how. Worse, you don’t know why.”

We’ve all experienced a “Saturday”. Perhaps you’re in the middle of a Saturday right now. You lost a job. Your marriage is in turmoil. Your test results were bad. Your dream fell through. The relationship is over. You’re getting kicked out. If you’re in the middle of a Saturday, then today is the day to have hope, to keep the faith and to believe that Sunday is coming.

恵みを逃さないでください

Walking along this pier at Point Lonsdale on the Australian surf coast one dark morning, the fog was so thick I could barely see more than a few feet in front of me. All I could really make out were the jetty lights, so I kept my eyes fixed on them and kept moving forward.

It reminded me of the story of Joseph in the Bible. As a teenager, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and then falsely accused and imprisoned, but he kept his eyes fixed on God and refused to lose faith. And God used his faith to help him become ruler of Egypt.

I’m sure we all want this sort of faith, but whenever we go through a dark time, we tend to focus more on the problem we’re facing instead of the God we’re following. When this happens, we risk missing the blessing God has planned for us on the other side of a trial.

If you're in the middle of a dark fog today, be like Joseph - keep your eyes fixed on God and believe that He is using this trial to prepare you for something new.
