Tip of the Week No.214 'flip-flop'

flip-flop とは英語でビーチサンダルのこと。
ちなみに和歌山ではビーチサンダルのことを水セッタと言います。
サンダルのことをセッタ、ビーチサンダルは一般的に水のある場所で履くものなので水セッタ。
和歌山で育った僕にとっては何の違和感もありませんが、結婚して和歌山に嫁いできた母には脊椎に電撃が走るほどの単語だったそうです 笑

さて flip-flop に戻りますが、今回は動詞としての意味について。
flip-flop v.
~ (on something) (informal, especially NAmE) to change your opinion about something, especially when you then hold the opposite opinion: The vice-president was accused of flip-flopping on several major issues.

flip-flop 動詞
~ (on something) (インフォーマル、特にアメリカ英語で使われる) 何かについての意見を変えること、特に真逆の意見を支持する：副大統領は主要課題の方針を反転させたことについて非難されました。

動詞としての意味は「(意見、方針、考え、態度など) を急に変える」こと。
ちなみに flip-flopper の意味はこう載ってありました。

Tip of the Week No.213 'seemingly'

気が付けばトランプ大統領が新型コロナウイルスに感染し、大統領選に復帰していました。
高齢の方は重症化しやすいというニュースをよく目にするので、トランプ大統領を好きか嫌いかは置いといて早く完治してよかったです。
でも本当に完治したんだろうか…。

2. (formal) according to what you have read or heard

seemingly 副詞
1. 外見から判断すると真実、でも実はそうではないかも：一見バカらしい質問 ◇ 果てしなく思える旅
2. (フォーマル) 読んだり聞いたりした情報によると

「一見、外見上、うわべは、どうやら」などと訳されます。

ドナルド・トランプはどうやらウイルス感染後、再びよくなったようだ。

the last minute idm.
the latest possible time before an important event: They changed the plans at the last minute.

the last minute イディオム
大事な出来事の本当にすぐ直前：彼らはギリギリになって予定を変えた。

'the last minute' を加えるだけで文中の感情が豊かになります。

Before the movie started, he said that he doesn't like loud sound.
映画が始まる前に、彼は大きな音が好きじゃないと言いました。

映画が始まる前に、ギリギリになって彼は大きな音が好きじゃないと言いました。(信じられないんですけど)

ちょっと文句を言ってる感が上がります。

ギリギリになって友だちが財布を忘れたと言ってきて、ぼくが支払う羽目になった。あいつらが食べたのは一番高いヤツだった。ワザと忘れてきたよね君たち。

Tip of the Week No.211 'ancient'

本来は「古代の」という意味で使われます。
例えば、「古代ローマ」は英語で 'ancient Rome'。
発音は エンシエント。
探せば類義語はあると思いますが、「古代の」は英語で？と聞かれるとほぼ全員が ancient と答えます。

今日はその ancient の2つ目の使い方について。
ancient adj.
2 very old; having existed for a very long time: an ancient oak tree ◇ancient monuments ◇(humorous) He's ancient - he must be at least fifty!

ancient 形容詞
2 とても古い；とても長い期間存在していること：とても古い樫の木◇大昔の建造物◇(ユーモアのある表現) 彼はヨボヨボだ。少なくとも50はいってるよ！

強調しておくと、意味や例文は辞書から引用しております。

「古代の」という意味としても使われるように、単に old を使うよりもかなり古い意味合いになります。
生き物に対してもユーモアを含んだ表現として使われます。
