「最終的には考えが変わるかもしれないが、今の時点では」という意味のイディオムです。

のように使われます。

Tip of the Week No.98 'tug of love'

辞書を開いていた時に偶然見つけた言葉です。
あまりいい意味ではありませんが…


tug of love noun [sing.] (BrE, informal) a situation in which a child's parents are divorced or no longer living together and are fighting over who the child should live with

tug of love 名詞 [歌] (イギリス英語、口語的) 子どもの両親が離婚、もしくはもはや同居をしておらずどちらが子どもと暮らすべきか争っている状況のこと


tug of war の次に載っていた言葉です。
これはどちらが力が強いか引き合いをする、つまり綱引きのことです。

tug of love は「愛の引っ張り合い」で、「親権者争い」のことをいいます。

runny 形容詞
1. (鼻や目が) 液体をたくさん作っている状態、風邪をひいたときなど
2. 普通よりもより液体であること；個体ではないもの：runny honey


鼻でいえばこういう状態です。

runny nose というのはよく聞きますが、runny eyes はあまり聞いたことがない…。
ネイティブは使うんだろうか？

英語において , がどれだけ重要か。
「コンマがなくても大したことないでしょ」とも思いますが、大したことあります。

違うのはコンマがあるかないか。
「おばあちゃんご飯食べよう！」という意味になるのは let's eat, Granny! です。
Let's eat Granny! は、「おばあちゃんを食べましょう」になります。


もう一つの例は Junior Illustrated Grammar and Punctuation から。



英語圏の児童用の参考書ですが、学習者には難しいくらいです。

ここに載ってあるのが、

伝えたいことは、「ヘイリーは料理、家族、ペットが大好きです」ということ。
もちろんコンマがあるほうが正解です。
