「夫がアメリカ人です」と言った時に、「わあ、かっこいい」と返ってくることがあり、返答に困る。
例えば、「私の 夫、中国人です」「インドネシア人です」「イラン人です」などと言ったならば、同じように「かっこいい！」と返ってくるだろうか？？
以前働いていたある店で、中年の女性客が言った。
「だんなさん、アメリカ人なの？かっこいいねえ。ご両親は反対しなかった？」
私の母は ‘アナタには日本人の男の人は合わないと思う。外国の人と結婚すれば？’ と、高校生だった私に言うような人なので、アメリカ人の彼との結婚も喜んで祝福してくれた。もちろん父も。
ちなみに母は ‘アナタ、メキシコ人と結婚すれば？？ 私、メキシコ行ってみたいわあ’ と言ったこともある。
そして私は、その後の女性客の言葉に唖然となった。
「そうなの～？ 娘がアメリカ人と結婚するって言ったらびっくりするかもしれないけど、それもいいかもねえ。でも、黒人はちょっとイヤね。」
そこで私が「私の夫は黒人ですよ」と言ったら気まずくなるよね。
だから黙って笑っていた。
アメリカ人と聞けば、金髪の青い目のすらりと背の高い人を思い浮かべるんだろう。
きっとそういう人は多いと思う。
アメリカ人＝白人
アメリカ人＝かっこいい
そういう米国崇拝、もうやめてもいいんじゃないかな。
てなことを、日本政府のアメリカに対する対応を見るにつけ思うこの頃。。。

How can I respond to that!?
What if my husband was Chinese?
Indonesian?
Iranian?
Would they still say, ‘That's cool!’?
There was a middle aged customer in a store where I worked before.
She said,
‘Is your husband American? Cool! But did your parent oppose to your marriage?’
My mom is not a typical Japanese mom.
when I was just 16 or 17, She said,
‘Maybe it's better for you to get marry someone not Japanese. I think you probably wouldn't get along with Japanese guys.’
So there were no problems with me & my husband getting married.
Of course my father was happy about it, too.
My mom once said,
‘Why don't you get married to Mexican!? I want to go to that country!’
And then the customer said,
‘What if my daughter says she is going to get married to American? Well I would say it's OK , but maybe not with an African-American. ’
I didn't say to her that my husband IS an African-American.
I didn't want to waste my time arguing about it with a customer.
Those people might imagine a tall guy with blond and blue eyes when they hear ‘American’
Stereotype.
American=White
American=Cool
I think people should give up their illusions about America.
I've been thinking about that kind of stuff because of seeing the Japanese government's response to the U.S. recently.
