長男の通う小学校は我が家から徒歩2、3分のところにある。
それを彼は2、30分かけて帰って来る。
いったいどこで何をしてるんだ？？
と、本人に聞いたら、
「探検」と答えた。
そうか～、探検してるのか～、毎日。
何の変哲もない住宅地でも、子供には発見できることがあるんだ。
私が通った田舎の小学校は、家から歩いて20分くらいだった。
やっぱり私もそれを１時間くらいかけて帰った。
食べられそうな木の実がないか探し、畑でなっている作物を見て、溝の淵を落ちないように歩き、古いラブホテルの駐車場の壁を誰が高くまでよじ上れるか競うのが、日々の日課だった。
学校への同じ行き帰りの道でさえ、子供にとっては素敵な時間なのだ。
息子を見ていると、そんな好奇心や冒険心や探究心を思い出してうれしくなる。
フランス帰りのAさんによると、向こうでは毎日親が子供の学校への送迎をしなければらならかったそうだ。
子供がどこかに連れ去られて、臓器売買などの目的で売り飛ばされるという恐ろしい事件が実際にあるらしい。
アメリカでも、小学生が20分も歩いて登校するなんてことはないだろう。
日本にも危険な事はもちろんあるけど、それでも、子供たちだけで行動できるくらいまだこの地域は安全だ。
子供の、彼らだけの素敵な秘密の時間や場所が奪われることがないように、平和で安心できる世の中であってほしい。
My oldest son's elementary school is just a short walk from here.
But he takes 2~30 minutes to come back home.
What on earth is he doing??
I asked him why he takes so long.
He said,
‘exploring’
I see!
He is exploring everywhere everyday.
Kids can find something interesting even in an ordinary residential area.
The elementary school that I went to was about 20 minutes away from my house.
It usually took me about an hour to get back home.
My friend and I looked around to find edible berries or fruits.
We carefully walked along the edge of a ditch and competed to see who could climb up higher on a wall of a lover's pad.
That was our daily routine.
It wasn't just commuting, but also a precious time for us kids.
Watching my son reminds me of kids' curious, enterprising, inquiring minds.
Mrs. A, who lived in France for while and came back here recently, told me that parents there have to take and pick up their children from school everyday.
Criminals kidnap children and sell their organs.
Horrible, but it's a real story.
I think children in the States don't walk 20 minutes to school by themselves.
I won't say it is totally safe here in Japan, but you don't have to worry about your kids too much, at least in my neighborhood.
I hope all kids can play and go to school safely.
We have to protect their precious world.
