Perhaps Bethpage’s best hole in terms of beauty and strategy, the fourth is a par 5 measuring 517 yards. This is a birdie hole that will give players options. It can be played conservatively as a three-shotter or may be challenged in two. Since 2002, the closely mown area behind the putting green has been softened to better keep long approach shots from rolling down the steep hill. Trees behind the green have also been eliminated, making the back-drop less defined. The green, which slopes front to back away from the player, is not particularly receptive to approaches – especially ones played from the drive zone, which sits much lower than the green. While the fourth will likely prove to be one of the easiest holes for the Open, it should also prove to be one of the most exciting.
Bethpage Black (ranked third on the Top 10 Golf Courses in the Country) was the site of the 2002 U.S. Open and again for 2009. Ever since the U.S. Open was played on the Black Course, the demand for tee-times has been tremendous and close to impossible to secure, especially for non-New York residents.
