They arrived on the outskirts of the city.

彼らは街のはずれに着た。
角（かど）に石の家がある。
ガイドは路地を曲がり、車を止めた。
二人は車を降りた。
古びた家である。
田舎にしては大きい家です。さすがに客室が２つあるだけのことはある。
たまに、ゲストを泊めて生計のたしにしているらしい。
ガイドは、先に進む。
「ここです」
木戸をたたく。
「トントン。エディケさん。エディケさん。いらしゃいますか？」
「はぁーい」
中から声がした。
女性が出てきた。裕也は少し驚いた。奇麗な女性である。
ガイドは、慣れていて気軽に話す。
「エディケ婦人。今日、泊めてにほしいお客さんがいるのですが。」
エディケは、喜んでいるようである。彼女は愛想よく返事した。
「あ ガイドさん」
（名前をつけようと思ったが、取りあえずガイドでよろしく）筆者。
「彼は裕也さんです」
ガイドは、裕也を紹介した。
「はじめまして、エディケ婦人。
愛武 裕也と言います。
私は、ある人からインドに会いに来るようにお手紙をいただきました。
それで、インドに来たのです。
だが、その詳しい場所が分かりません。
その手紙に、添えられてたのがこのペンダントです。
このペンダントの送り主を探しています。
明日も、このペンダントのことでスドウさんと会うことに成っています。
今日、ここに泊めていただけると助かります」
裕也は、ペンダントを見せた。
エディケは、ペンダントを見て目が輝いた。

部屋は整頓されている。入り口を除いてドアが３つあった。
窓があり、日が沈んできて傾いた日差しが入ってきている。
奥にキッチンがある。
これから、食事の準備をするらしい。
コンロに鍋が置かれている。
その前にテーブルある。
テーブルの片側に２つづつ椅子が４つ並んでいる。
ドアの一つを開けた。廊下がある。
エディケは、家の中を案内する。
客室に続いているらしい。
その一つのドアを開け、裕也を通す。
中には、ベットとクローゼットがあった。
「裕也さん。夕食までここで休んでいてください。
夕食が出来ましたらお呼びします」
