“ KAIDO-TOSEI ”
海道東征
By Kitahara-Hakushu
北原白秋
This poem was originarity in 1940 by Mr.Kitahara-Hakushu. one of the few celebrated poets of this country, in compliance with the request of the Nippon Bunka Chuo Renmei Foundation, which sponsored ❛ The 26th Centenary Dramatic and Philharmonic Celebration of The Japanese Empire ❜ in every dramatic and philharmonic line throughout the year 1940. This was indeed a grand cultural movement, which was nation-wide in its scope and which proved a great contribution to the renovation as well as the advancement of the national culture in general.
The “ Kaido- Tosei, ” or “ The Eastern Expedition by Sea, ” is a part of an unfinished trilogy, celebrating the glorious deeds of the Emperor Jimmu in founding the Japanese Empire 2601 year ago. It was composed into a Cantata by Mr. Nobutoki-Kiyoshi〔信時潔〕, Professor at the Tokyo Academy of Music, who is one of the foremost composers of this country, also at the special request of the Foundation.
Prof. Nobutoki❜ s arduous effort to express the Japanese patbos in the form of Cantata, which had never been attempted before in this country on such a big scale, was rewarded with a great success. It was first performed before the public on November 26, 1940, at the Hibiya Public Hall, Tokyo, under the auspices of the Nippon Bunka Chuo Renmei Foundation. Since then it has been performed several times by various groups, which itself is a proof of the success of the music as well as the words of the “ Kaido- Tosei. ” ―The Editor.
