Tip of the Week No.224 'rubbish'

今回の Tip of the Week はイギリス英語の代表 rubbish です。



辞書で調べても BrE (イギリス英語) という表記が並びます。
Harry Potter でもよく出てくるし、90年代のバンド Blur のアルバムにも Modern Life is Rubbish というのがあります。
それだけイギリス人に愛用されている単語。
名詞としての3つの意味について


rubbish n.
1 (especially BrE) things that you throw away because you no longer want or need them: a rubbish bag/bin ◇ a rubbish dump/heap/tip ◇ The streets were littered with rubbish. ◇ garden/household rubbish

2 (BrE, informal) (also used as an adjective) something that you think is of poor quality: I thought the play was rubbish! ◇ Do we have to listen to this rubbish music?

3 (BrE, informal) comments, ideas, etc. that you think are stupid or wrong: Rubbish! You're not fat. ◇ You're talking a load of rubbish. ◇ It's not rubbish - it's true!

rubbish 名詞
1 (とくにイギリス英語) もう使うことがない、必要がないなどの理由で捨てるもののこと：ごみ袋/箱 ◇ ごみ捨て場 ◇ 道がごみで散らかされていた。◇ 庭のごみ/家庭ごみ

2 (イギリス英語、インフォーマル) (形容詞としても使われる) 質が悪いと思うもののこと：あの芝居はつまらないと思ったよ！◇ ぼくたち、このくだらない音楽を聴かないとダメなのかな？

もともとは「ごみ」として、それは今では否定的だと表現したいときにも使われています。
