今まで読んで、いくつか気になる文章がある。
まず１つは、
９ページ３１行目 ❝A beautiful animal!❞ と１０ページ５行目 ❝A strange choice of favourites!❞ である。
どちらも感嘆符が付いている。
おそらく❝What❞ が省略された感嘆文だと思う。
昨年度の「ラジオ英会話」でそのような話を聞いたことがある。
だから、❝What a beautiful animal!❞ ❝ What a strange choice of favourites!❞ と考えると良さそうだ。
次に、１０ページの３行目から８行目までの全文は、以下の通りである。
❝Ah, your favourites are among there?❞ I continued, turning to an obscure cushion full of something like cats.
❝A strange choice of favourites!❞ she observed scornfully.
Unluckily,it was a heap of dead rabbits. I hemmed once more, and drew closer to the hearth, repeating my comment on the wildness of the evening.
最も気になっている箇所が、it was a heap of dead rabbits. である。
この一文でずっと引っかかっていた。
訳文はそれぞれ、
河野一郎さん訳 『それは死んだ兎の山だった』
中村佐喜子さん訳 『それは死んだ兎のひと山だった』
永川玲二さん訳 『それは兎の死体の山だった』
となっている。
一流の先生方なので、間違いはないと思うけれど、
dead rabbits で『死んだ兎』と訳すのは正しいのだろうが、それでも疑問を強く感じている。
それは、家の中に兎の死体がクッションの上で山になっていたら、と想像するとすごく不気味である。
部屋の中に死体の兎を置くことじたい、不思議に思う。
もしかしたら、後の文章で兎の死体に触れる箇所があるのかもしれないけれど、今の所そんな文章はない。
兎の死体に触れた直後の文章は、「ぼくはまたひとつせきばらいをし、椅子を暖炉に近づけながら、きょうの荒れ模様のことをくりかえした」（中村佐喜子さん訳）となるのだ。
『死ぬ』dieの三人称単数形・過去形・過去分詞形など変化形は、dies died dyingなどだ。deadは含まれていない。
もし死んだとなると、They were died. や a heap of dying rabbits とならないだろうか？
中学２年生程度の英語力しかなく、英文法をあまり知らない自分がとやかく言える立場ではないけれど、どうしても納得が行かない。
そこで『dead』を手元の『新コンサイス英和辞典』で調べたら、
死んだ、枯れたなどの他に、『死んだような、活気のない、生気のない、ぐったりと疲れた』などの訳が載っていた。
おそらく、これだろうと思った。
兎は死んでいるのではなく、『元気がなくてぐったりした状態』で重なり合っているのではないだろうかと。
自分勝手な読み方かもしれないけれど、『それは生気のない兎たちがじっとして動かないまま折り重なっていた』状況をイメージする。

turning to an obscure cushion full of something like cats.と、「なにか猫のようなもの」（中村佐喜子さん訳）と表現している。
もしかしたら、ここも、like dead rabbits と解釈でき、likeが省略されていると考えられないだろうかと。
など、いろんなことを思案しながら、原文を読んでいる。
自分には英文法の知識や英語の読解力がないので、苦労の連続だ。
もし自分が学生だったら、英語の先生にぜひ聞いてみたい。
そしてもし英文科なら、『嵐が丘』を卒論に取り上げると、しっかり英語学習ができそうだと思った。
