試験期間中 (Exam Week)

日本はもうすぐGWですが、InseadではP2の人達（'07年1月開始）は
今日から3日間（6科目）の期末試験が始まっています。

と言うわけで、図書館は満杯状態。
僕らの期は図書館が閉まる15分前から図書館パーティー（笑）をしてたようですが、
この期はどうなんでしょう？？？^^;

そして皆今週から9-11日くらいのお休みに入りますが、
僕もレポートを2つ仕上げて今週末からアフリカ（祝！5大陸制覇！）へ
飛ぶ予定でぇ～す。楽しみ♪

In Japan, maybe you are looking forward to having a Golded Week starting
from this weekend; here at Insead, P2s (who started this January) are
having exams beginning today till this Friday.

So, you can see a bunch of people at library.
Our promotion used to hold a library party 15 minutes before
the library closed at midnight, but is this still popular now???

Anyway, we will have a break (9-11 days) starting this week.
I plan to visit Africa (Yeah! 5th continent!) for a week since this weekend
after finishing another two reports!

ネスレCEOのお話 （Nestle CEO's speech）

昨晩は学校へネスカフェなどで有名なスイスの食品会社、ネスレのCEOの
ピーター・ブラベック・レトマス（すいません、読めません・・・）氏が
『グローバルリーダーシップの挑戦』という題目で講演にいらっしゃいました。

内容は特に真新しいものはありませんでしたが、
・数ヶ国で働き、数ヶ国語を話すのはマネジメント層では当たり前
・掃除係の方も含め、下位層の社員ともコミュニケーションを取る
・その分野で秀でた人が各機会においてリーダーシップを取ればいい
・違う国/地域に進出するなら、そこのルール/文化に倣うことが大事
・有能なチームになるためには競争意識と一体感の両者が必要
など具体例を交えて語ってくださいました。
ネスレのような模範的大企業のリーダーを10年勤めている方から聞くと、
流石に説得力があるなぁと感じていました。

また、ご自身のキャリア形成に関しては、技術バックグラウンド出身？のようで、
・専門的職業からジェネラルマネジメントへの変化が最も大きな挑戦だった
・今までで昇進を素直に喜んだのはたった1度の例外以外は1度もない
など友人が『嘘だろぉ～』と言うようなこともおっしゃってました。

以前、IBMのCEOが来校された際には理解力が乏しくて（眠くて？）
ほとんど内容を覚えてないのですが、僕も少しは成長したようです。

We welcomed the CEO of Nestle, the world famous food company,
Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe to our Europe campus last night.
He had a speech about "The challenges of global leadership."

The content per se wasn't so original to me as a whole, however;
- Management worked several countries and speak several languages
- Have regular communications with lower people including cleaning staff
- A person who is good at a certain field should lead his/her team
in a certain opportunity
- It's important to follow/respect the rule and culture when going into
new country/region
- Competition and solidarity are necessary for an excellent team
and so on did he give us in his speech.
Actually, hearing those words from the CEO of one of the most respected
companies in the world sounded very persuasive.

As for his own career, he mentioned:
- The most challenging moment was jumping from specialty to general management
- Never welcomed promotions except just one case
and my friend was very skeptical for the second comment later.

Last time when I listened to the speech of the CEO of IBM,
I couldn't remember almost everything of his speech
due to my incapability of understanding English.
Maybe I've improved my listening skill during my MBA life so far.
