シンガポール発上陸！ (Singapore!)

と言うわけで、なぜかコロンボで１時間機内で待たされた後、
ようやく高温多湿のシンガポールへやって来ました！

雰囲気はやはりトロピカルな感がありますが、
マーケット、ビルなどは香港とすごく似てる気がします。
まぁ、こちらのほうが道路や素材などを贅沢に使ってますが。

来年1,2月はこちらのInseadでお勉強ですが、
早くも遊びたい気持ちが高ぶってきました（爆）。

Then, I'm now in Singapore after spending additional 1 hour
in an airplane at Colombo on the way to Singapore.

My first impression on Singapore is its similarity to Hong Kong.
How the buildings are built and what the local market is like
resemble what in Hong Kong, I think.
Of course, its scale and detail are different from those in HK.

I'll study at Singapore Campus of Insead since for two months,
but can't help waiting for traveling and enjoying marine activities...

ドバイ（トランジット編） (Transit at Dubai)

皆様、こんにちは。
私は今、中東はUAEの首都（だっけ？）、ドバイに来ております。
と言ってもトランジット（乗り継ぎ）で３時間、空港にいるだけですが。

個人的には中東初上陸（と言えるのか・・・）！
で、降りるや否や・・・なんや、この買い物天国は？
カートで免税品を買い物してる空港って初めて見ました。

で、中東初上陸で思ったこと。
・通貨Dhsって何？（久しぶりに両替しました）
・暑い（今、真夜中は20℃くらいらしい）
・ビール高い！（換算すると\900/パイントする）
・インターネットつなぎ放題？！（なぜかつながる）
・フランスの携帯使用可能！（さすがGSM?)

これからシンガポールへコロンボ乗り継ぎで行きまっす！
（コロンボってスリランカだっけ・・・）

Hi, I'm now in Dubai, UAE!
This is my first visit to middle east,
but I will stay only 3 hours for transit to Singapore.

The first thing I came up with was this DUTY FREE MARKET!
(See picture)
I have never seen the airport where people do shopping
using shopping carts...

Then the things I thought when I came here were:
-Different currency (Dhs)
-Moderate hot!(20degrees at midnight)
-Expensive beer!(about 6 euros per pint)
-Free Internet at airport?(not sure)
-I can use French cellular phone!

My next flight will go to Singapore via Colombo.

ついでにランスへ (And a visit to Reims)

来る途中にちょうど位置するということで、
フォンティへの帰りにランスを訪問しました。

ここは大聖堂などが世界遺産に登録されているので有名ですが、
（ちなみにストラスブールの大聖堂なども世界遺産）
来てみたらクリスマスマーケットがすごいのなんのって！
規模はストラスブールの数倍。。人、ヒト、ひと。。。
街としてやや大きめなせいなのでしょうかね？

また、天気が良かったためか、道中の景色はとても素晴らしく、
田舎を通るたびに、北海道に来た気分がしてます（笑）。
フランスはやはり農業国ですね。

I visited Reims while driving back to Fonty
because Reims locates in between Fonty and Strasbourg.

Reims is famous for its beautiful cathedrals whici is one
of the world heritages in France.
(Those in Strasbourg are also world heritages.)
However, I was surprised to see a lot of X'mas markets!
Its scale was a couple of times bigger than that in Strasbourg...
Too many people...and Santa.

In addition, I enjoyed driving through the local areas in France.
The weather was nice and the scenery really looked like that in Hokkaido, Japan.
I love those areas and understand that France is good at agriculture.

ストラスブールのクリスマスマーケット (X'mas market in Strasbourg)

学校の友達とは都合がつかなかったのですが、
ストラスブールにいる友人と連絡が取れたので、
1泊2日のドライブで行ってきました♪

ここ、ストラスブールは『もみの木』発祥の地らしく、
クリスマスマーケットで有名だそうです。
僕の旅行もマーケット観光が主な目的で、語学学校で知り合った
友人と半年振りに会うことができるのも楽しみの1つでした。

さすが本場？のクリスマスマーケットだけあって、
お面やショール、お菓子やおもちゃまで、いろんなものが
至る所で売られていて、ヨーロッパ中からの観光客と
地元の人達が本当にクリスマスを楽しんでいるという感じがして
日本とは違う、家族を大事にする欧風クリスマスだなぁ～と
直に感じ取ることが出来ましたね。

友人とは3人で食事をしたのですが、ドイツに近いため、
本場ドイツ風のシュークルートや名物のタルトフランベ？を
地ビールで味わうという贅沢・・・あぁ、感無量（笑）。
彼女らは2人とも芸術家肌だったので、やや対極に位置する僕としては
なかなか面白い話を聞けました。

やっぱり、旅先での再会はいいものですね。

As I could contact with my friend in Strasbourg,
I visited there by driving for about 6 hours.

Strasbourg is said to be the origin of fir tree
and is very famous for its X'mas market.
That was my first priority of this journey and
the second was to meet my friend
whom I met while studying French this June.

There were a ton of masks, shawls, cakes and toys for X'mas.
People in the neighborhood and all around the Europe would
enjoy watching and shopping there.
I felt that X'mas was really for family in Europe, which was
not the same as in Japan.

We enjoyed German choucroute and tarte flambee with local beer...
It was really privilege to be in Strasbourg (France)!!!
And they are both artists who are literally on the other edge of us,
so talks with them were very interesting to me.

I really love meeting friends abroad!

霜 (Chilly weather)

ついでに最近の気候について。

フランスの冬は寒いというより痛いという話も聞きますが、
気温的にはそれほど変わらない（といっても0℃前後ですが）のに
えらい芯にひびく寒さのような気がします。

僕の家はセーヌ川沿いに建っているせいか、
寒い日は朝になると庭が凍ってます。^^;
で、車ももち凍ってます。^^;;;
おかげで、朝は暖機運転が欠かせません。。。

Winter in France is not so different from that in Japan, I think.
However, it is really chilly here.

As you can see, my house's garden is frozen when cold in the morning.
It is because, I guess, our house stands next to the Seine river.
Then, of course, my car is also frozen...
So, every morning I go to school, I need at least 5 minutes
to warm my car up...

ルーヴル美術館 (Musee du Louvre)

と言うわけで、お休み初日の昨日は、シンガポールへ荷物を発送した後、
友達（インドネシア人）とパリのルーヴル美術館を訪れました。
前回行ったのは・・・なんと7年前！
美術館の前までは何度か足を運びましたが、
中に入るのは本当に久しぶりでした。

今回の訪問のテーマは『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』ツアー！（笑）
ルーヴルの方でダ・ヴィンチ・コード用のオーディオガイドを用意していて、
それを借りてまぁ、映画や小説の中での主人公達の動きを
追っていくわけですね。もちろん、名画の説明などをちりばめて。
後で映画や小説を見返すとより楽しめるかもしれません。

その後は他のクラスメイト達やドタ参のLBSの韓国人と共に
モロッコ料理？を堪能した後、Pont Neufの側にある
『KONG』というバー・レストランへ行きました。

ここはどうもアメリカのドラマ、"Sex And The City"で
使用されたらしいのですが、僕は見てないので。。。^^;
値段は高めの設定ですが、雰囲気は良かったので
パリに来た際には訪れてみてもいいかと思います。

Yesterday, the first day of winter break,
after sending the packages to Singapore,
I visited the Louvre Meseum in the afternoon with my friend.
This was my 2nd visit but for the first time since
I visited there 7 years ago!
I passed through in front of the meseum, but never entered
since I visited Paris 7 years ago...

We rented the audio guide specially made for the "Da Vinci Code" Tour.
The tour takes us to the footprints that characters in the novel or movie
of "Da Vinci Code" and explains the backgrounds and pictures.
If you review the movie or novel after experiencing this tour,
you can enjoy more the world of "Da Vinci Code."

After visiting the Louvre, we met other Insead classmates and
the tourist from London Business School who was a friend of my friend.
We enjoyed Morocco cuisine and visited the bar-restaurant, "KONG."
It locates near the Pont Neuf and seemed to have shown
in the Amarican drama, "SEX AND THE CITY."
Although I have not watched it yet, my friends seemed to be happy to be there.
The price was actually set with premium, but the atmosphere was really good.
So you might be there when in Paris.

2学期終了！ (P2 is over!)

ちょっとタイムラグがありますが、P2が19日に終わりましたーっ！
慣れてきたせいもあるんでしょうが、今学期は早かった・・・
仕事量も1科目増えて6科目あったし、戦略やマーケティングなど
ケース分析が多くてそちらの面でも大変でした。ふぅ。

また、授業中での発言回数が増えたせいか、パーティーの回数が増えたせいか、
それとも週末にミラノやアムステルダムへ行っいていたせいか、
クラスメイトを始め、友達が増えた気がします。
まぁ、そのぶん、勉強がおろそかになっていた気もしますが・・・

一応試験も終わり、ようやく冬休み突入です！
とりあえず宿題も何もないので、のんびりしたいと思います。

We've finally finished P2 on 19th!
This term have passed so fast, maybe because I got used to
the speed of MBA study at Insead.
However, we had 6 subjects this term and a ton of case analyses
for strategy, marketing and so on, devoting much of my time on them.

I got a lot of friends this term, I think.
It was because I had spoken more in class, because I went to a lot of
parties, or because I visited Milan and Amsterdam on weekend.
On the other hand, I could not study well this term...

Anyway, the exams have passed and we are in the winter break!
As I have no homeworks, I will spend freely and be relaxed.

授業の様子について (The other side of MBA class)

試験勉強が相変わらず捗らないので、
今日はクラスの様子について話したいと思います。

欧米ではだいたいそうみたいですが、日本で体験したいわゆる講義形式の授業は少なくて、
学生と教授が相互に意見をぶつけ合うディスカッション形式のものが多いです。

もちろん、財務や会計、ミクロ経済などは講義中心になりますが、
学生がいっさいしゃべらないということは全くなく、
中にはしゃべるのを抑えきれない人もいます。^^;

また、教授次第ですが、カジュアルな雰囲気の授業が多く、
生徒主体でこれまで下記のようなイベント？も授業中に行われました。

・シャンパンペナルティー
Inseadでは、建設的でない発言をした人、授業中に寝てた人、
携帯電話を鳴らした人などにシャンパン１本寄贈のペナルティーを
与えることが通例となっています。僕も３本ほど寄贈しました・・・
で、集めたシャンパンは試験後などに皆に振舞われます。

・ブルシット・ビンゴ

『既存概念の外を見よ』、『大局観』などいわゆる専門的な流行言葉を
聞いたらビンゴの穴を埋めていき、揃ったら『ブルシット！！』と
叫ぶというもの。なかなか使わない言葉が多くて埋まらないのですが、
授業中に叫ぶのもなかなか勇気がいります（苦笑）。

・インド訛り限定
今週はデージー・ウィーク（インド、パキスタン、バングラデシュ）だったのですが、
週の最後の金曜日の授業で、インド訛りしばりが行われました。
まぁ、教授もその辺りは寛容で、訛らない生徒には『君は参加しないのか？』
と訪ねたりしてました。もちろん、僕もインド訛り英語で発言し、
クラスの皆から拍手をもらいました（笑）。

とまぁ、交流を出来るだけ広げようという目的もあって、
Inseadでは普段こんなことが行われているということですね。^^

I'd like to refer to what is going on in our class today.

It seems that discussion style is popular in the US and Europe,
but lecture style is preferred in Japan (and in other Asia).
Here at Insead, most of the class is operated through discussion.

It is a little difficult to teach Finance, Accounting, Microeconomics
and so on, but even these classes are also taught with discussion
to some extent and some people cannot refrain from speaking.

When it comes to the atmosphere in our class, it is usually casual.
In addition, of course it depends on professor, but some events were
held during the class as follows:

- Champagne Fine
This is one of the INSEAD tradition.
People who say irrelevant or stupid things, sleep during the class,
and have his/her cell phone ring are fined with one bottle of champagne.
All of stocks are distributed after exams and so on.
I also donated three bottles of champagne...

- Bullshit Bingo

Buzzwords such as "Think outside of box," "Big Picture," are one of the
parts of Bingo card, and if you hear those words, you can get a point.
When you reached the Bingo, you have to say in the class, "BULL SHIT!"
Of course, you need some courage to say it during the class.

- Indian accent
As this week is Desi-week (India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh),
We had to use only Indian accent during one of the classes on Friday.
Fortunately the prof was generous and asked the person who talked normally
"Do not you use the Indian accent?"
I also spoke in Indian English and got applause from classmates.^^

In this way we become familiar with each other...^^

メルクのケーススタディ (Case Study: Merck&Co.,Inc.)

MBAと言えば、ハーバード(HBS)の作成したケース（実例に基づいた経営分析）
によるケーススタディが有名ですが、ここINSEADでもP2（第２ターム）から
ケース分析が増え、多い日で３つケース（＋宿題）を抱えたりします。

INSEADはヨーロッパケースアワードをよく受賞するなど、数少ないケース作成を
するビジネススクールであり、ヨーロッパという地域性もあって、
INSEADのケースは授業でよく見かけます。
これまで見た例では、ケロッグ（ノースウエスタン大学）や
ダーデン（バージニア大学）のケースもありましたが、
今日の組織行動論の授業ではスタンフォード大学のケースを扱いました。
内容が印象に残るものだったので、ちょっと書き記してみたいと思います。

主題は『メルク（アメリカの製薬会社）』について。

ニュースで見かけたこともあると思いますが、製薬業界のビジネスモデルは
すごいお金を幾つもの案件に先行投資して、厳しい基準をパスしてきたものの中から
１、２つの大きなヒット商品の儲けで投資回収するというものです。

そのため、ヒットにつながるかが会社の存続を左右するのですが、
メルクがぶつかった問題は、
『盲目につながるシビアな病気だが発展途上国でしか流行しておらず、
投資しても売れないことが分かりきっている病気への新薬の開発に
いつまで投資し続けるか？』というものでした。

クラスでYes/Noに分かれて議論を進めるのですが、
・経営者として株主の利益に反することは出来ない
・投資を打ち切ることは会社の経営方針に反する
・長期的には株主利益につながるので投資しつづけるべき
など、意見は色々分かれてなかなか興味深い授業でした。

実際はメルクは開発を続行し、商品化からデリバリーまで全て行ったそうです。
数億～数十億円をほぼドブに捨てるような決断を行ったように見えますが、
結果としては無償配布をアナウンスした際に株価が上昇し、
株主利益を損ねることもなかったようです。

現在でも、製薬会社はこのように人道的な新薬開発をポートフォリオに
必ずといっていいほど含めているようです。
理由は『研究者の動機付け』が１番であるそう。
この話を聞いて、世の中まだまだ捨てたもんじゃないなと思いました。^^

Speaking of MBA, we often come up with "Case Study,"
a study with a case that is based on the past business example.
Here at INSEAD, we study 1-3 cases a day when busy since P2 term.

INSEAD is one of a few business schools that provides case study,
sometimes awarding European Case Award.
We have studied the case made at INSEAD, Kellogg, and Darden except HBS so far.
I'd like to refer to the case study made at Stanford GSB at the Leading Organization class
because it was impressive to me.

The subject is "Merck & Co., Inc."

Some people would know the fact that the business model of pharmaceutical
company is earning most of its profit with 1 or 2 blockbusters
that survived the medical-testing by government,
investing over millions of dollars on more than 1,000 projects in advance.

Hence, investing on the "right" project decides the future existence of
the company.
However, Merck hit the problem:
"Should Merck keep investing on the project for a new drug that, even
if successful, might never pay for itself because the drug only cures
people living in poor developing countries."

We discussed it splitting our class to "Definitely YES, slightly YES,
slightly NO, and definitely NO."
- We cannot invest the project whose NPV is negative
- Cancelling the project is inconsistent with the corporation policy
- The project will finally lead to the benefit for stockholders
etc...
Our class was splitted into YES/NO, and each person had his/her own opinion,
so it was an interesting class.

Merck actually went ahead, finished the development and even delivered it
at the cost of its profit.
It apparently looks Merck abondoned its money, but the stock price went up
when the delivery news was announced, making its stockholders happy.

Even now and in other pharmaceutical companies,
this kind of research has been incorporated into their portfolio
because it greatly motivates their researchers.
Hearing this fact, I felt a little happy with our society.^^
