Here's my strong recommendation to visit this Mouri feuderal lord's garden in Hofu city, Yamaguchi pref, if you are planning to visit Hiroshima(Itsukushima shrine , A-bomb dome) and Shimane(Izumo shrine, A-museum).
I've made my lucky direction new year shrine visit to the famous Hofu Tenmangu in Yamaguchi pref. for the very first time. I happened to find a Japanese garden on the map, so I visited there without any pre-info.
THEN! I found out that this Mori family manshion's garden is faaaaaaaar better than the #1 chosen (by an American garden magazine or authority or something)garden in Shimane pref. I must add that I love the strolling kind of gardens so much. Because you can find the beauty faces of the place by your own senses. The beauty of nature is how they keep changing, never stay the same. This transience is everything! Since no flowers are blooming, I saw the antique plum trees are ready to bloom and cherry blossom trees around the pond, wisteria shelf. The leaflet shows that the Momiji season, the late autumn, is the best. So, they show the national treasures( Sesshu: calligraphy paintings, the letter of the three arrows lesson of the Mouri family in public at their museum only during that Momiji season. What's more, you are allowed to enjoy a picnic here!

You can also see inside the mansion with the fee of the garden. (Only rare treasures are in the museum that you have to pay extra) Kaoru Inoue, who was notorious for hasting Japan to westernize without balancing well in the early Meiji era, was assigned as a leader to design this gorgeous residence. You'll be astonished at his taste in deciding the interior in the end Meiji era. For example, he ordered chandelier lights abroad( not available in Japan in those days), with the taste of Japanese! The taste is not mediocre or something fake. Very refined and somehow authentic Japanese! I've visited some Meiji era mansions in Tokyo. But they are all completely western. This is a Japanese former feuderal lord's in the Edo era.
I wish all the foreign visitors who's planning to visit the magazine selected #1 A museum in Shimane, I'd highly recommend visiting here also. Mind blowing, really! TRUST ME! You won't regret
