母さん、僕のあの帽子、どうしたでせうね？
ええ、夏 碓井から霧積へ行くみちで、
渓谷へ落としたあの麦稈帽子ですよ。
母さん、あれは好きな帽子でしたよ。
僕はあのとき、ずいぶんくやしかった。
だけど、いきなり風が吹いてきたもんだから。
母さん、あのとき、向うから若い薬売が来ましたっけね。
紺の脚絆に手甲をした・・・。
そして拾はうとしてずいぶん骨折ってくれましたっけね。
だけどとうとう駄目だった。
なにしろ深い渓谷で、それに草が
背丈ぐらい伸びていたんですもの。
母さん、本当にあの帽子どうなったでせう？
そのとき傍に咲いていた車百合の花は、
もうとうに枯れちゃつたでせうね。そして、
秋には、灰色の霧があの丘をこめ、
あの帽子の下で毎晩きりぎりすが鳴いたかも知れませんよ。
母さん、そして、きっと今頃は、今夜あたりは、
あの渓間に、静かに雪が降りつもっているでせう。
昔、つやつや光った、あの伊太利麦の帽子と、
その裏に僕が書いた
Y・Sという頭叉字を
埋めるように、静かに、寂しく・・・。
