Tip of the Week No.261 'faint'

今週の Tip of the Week は faint という単語について。
オックスフォード現代英英辞典によると、形容詞としての意味は4つありますが、今回は動詞としての使い方を紹介します。


faint verb
to become unconscious when not enough blood is going to your brain, usually because of the heat, a shock, etc.

faint 動詞
暑さ、ショックなどが原因で、十分な血液が脳に届かなくなり意識を失うこと


faint は日本語で「気絶する」という意味。


動詞として使う場合はこんな感じ。

I couldn't stand the smell, and I nearly fainted.
臭いに我慢できず、もうちょっとで気絶するところだった。

I almost fainted from the prank that my friend set up.
友だちが仕掛けたドッキリにもうちょっとで気を失うところだった。
