absent とは留守、mind とは思考という意味です。
その2つがくっついた表現 absent-minded

absent-minded: [adj] tending to forget things, perhaps because you are not thinking about what is around you, but about something else.

absent-minded: [形容詞] 身の回りで起きている物事ではなく、何か他のことを考えているため忘れてしまう傾向にあること。



ということで、absent-minded の意味は「上の空の」です。
おもしろく言えば「おつむがお留守の」という感じ。
