Ése es el último mensaje de móvil SMS que uno de los pasajeros fallecido, Rubén Santana Mateo, envió a su mujer momentos antes del accidente del avión Spanair en el que viajaba junto con otras 175 personas, que se estrelló ayer. Combinatorial chemsitry of food additives

Wooden cutlery, cabbage spoon, My chopstics

It has been very warm today...

All leading to a decrease in productivity.
Anyway, the current lot went mat, as shown below.



The piece half way down is the divider between the
done and the not yet done, "done"?, it refers to
post-matting operation, of removing faulty anomalies.

In addition, I managed to make 3 more..., as shown.



As you can see, no end-incision, no peg holes, and
I will do that tommorrow. Most of my time today was
therefore, spent on sawing out the pieces for more

containers, seen here.



One burning issue here is this. Take a look at the following
illustration.



A, B, and C are all showing the peg hole schematics.

The red blobs are the emulsion I want to use, 60 % of which
is water, and the ideal situation is A, the emulsion
only deposited at the botom of the peg hole.

Up until now, I have been using thin prickers, and
the net result is always something like B!

What you really need is a syringe, as in C, and the next
shows my preliminary attempt at that.



It did not get me anywhere. The emulsion is too thick!
If it were runnier I could have got somewhere, but then...
I need a larger bore, and I think I can buy one of those,

I hope, off the shelf, at Tokyu Hands?

No, I have not done anything yet on the cabbage spoon,
which is the largest in terms of concave surface.

I am talking about the image below.



The cabbage spoon, as I call it, is meant for heavy work,
such as scooping up the whole cabbage (nearlly),
or the whole apple. It is coating ready, and it has been

lying around in my coating shed for such a long time!
It is about time I did some coating on it!

Wooden cutlery, My chopstics and containers

There is a limit to what one can achieve in a single
day. Today is no exception..., and I have very few
images.



OK, 7 more containers, all ready for coating. Coating
of the last lot is continuing, despite the heat...

Those few, particularly in the middle of this
photo, make me wonder what if I use two different
materials. A striking contrast, I think that is

what I may be after...

Anyway, bringing these 7 of them into this form, yes, did take time!
It is a number problem, after all... The more you have
of the same kind, the more boring the end result in the

photo...

On top of that I have this.



The same pieces minus one from yesterday?, but
more refined, of course. Minus one?, I simply
mislaid one, that is all.

I need to fabricate 30 more containers, so that
I can give them away to my former colleagues, who
are all females. Males do not care, that is why...

The more I think about today's amount, the more
I am drawn into the idea of expanding, or supplementing
my log with something else.

I will do that as follows. Take a look at the illustration.



A is the earth schematic. Here, I pose
a simple question to you.

What if you put a red rope all around the maximum
circumference of the earth so that there is no gap
between the rope and the surface of the earth.

This is depicted as B, and the rope does not strech,
nor shrink... The real question is this. If you make
the rope longer by one meter and do the same,

(that is to say, evenly with respect to the
earth surface)

there will be a gap, or space, albeit limited, between
the rope and the earth surface. My question is what you think
this gap might be, or the height of the gap, space,

whatever you call it...

With this illustration C's white ring is the gap. The
gap I am talking about is additionally shown as an aside,
to the right of it, C.

It may seem a simple arithmetic, and in fact you can
put numbers in. That, will, however, take time...
But, do you know the numbers in the first place?

If you do that, in fact, if you do that, you will
not be able to survive in the world of physics...
And, I have survived!

The straight answer is just over 30cm and I do not have
the exact number, you can do it yourself.

You may, of course, not believe it. Just an ellongation
by a mere one meter leading to so much space...

The length of a circle is defined as 2 x pai x its radius, R.
We are talking about an infinitesimal increase in the
circle length, of course.

The radius, R, on the other hand is measured from
the centre of the earth to the rope. The gap here is
equivalent to the infinitesimal increase in the R!

We are talking about 2 x pai x dR! And the dR here is
the gap height! So much is the power of the differential
calculus!, as opposed to integral calculus!

The answer is this. 2 x pai x gap height = one meter.
This value is, in fact, indepndent of the radius,
so that the same value will emerge, be it with a ping pong ball,

or with anything circular!

After all, I am a physicist, through and through!

Wooden cutlery, MY CHPSTICS, movers

Summer is warm, most of the time, sometimes
hot, like today. I was sweating it out all day!

Coating is continuing, in a semi closed environment,
a very natural source of energy drainage...

Anyway, I am not complaining too much. After all,
50 years ago, we did not have airconditioners...

What follows was a simple job, adding some other
tubes for identifying chopstics, about one third
of them on the left are the new additions.



I have another set, but very often it is easier to use
one set, to take into the coating shed... and that is why
I have increased the number of the tubes.

Anyway, apart from this small work, all of today was
spent on the containers, all seven of them, but I could
not complete them all for coating. Take a look at the following.



These were holed and opening cuts made, but there remain
another three, as shown below.



The fundamental reason is the operational time limits
imposed on me due to ohmic heating. In the case of
trench making it is half an hour. You then have to

cool down your system for the same duration.
That is why it takes time. And, that is why you want to
spend your time on something else.

What follows is what I did. More containers to be...



Another 30 odd containers will have to be fabricated!
It is a long way to go! In the meantime, my mind was
flying off to our mountain cottage.

Take a look at the following illustration.



My problem is this. My parents bought the lot, nearly
40 years ago. So, the lot is large, compared with
other mountain cottages that are springing up in the

region. That is the problem... From the car park down below
it takes more than, easily, 100 steps up and up, to reach our house.
In the heat of high summer, it is a gtruelling task

to move things from the car park to our house. I am thinking,
now, in terms of a cart, as shown in the illustration.
I have not come up with the power mechanisms, but, the idea
is there.

I will construct a narrow concrete slab of passage, from the car
partk to the house, and in the centre of it will be a raised
guiding rail, a single rail which will act as a guidance.

Slightly meandering, but there is no significant barrier
to the passage of the cart. Where does the energy come from?

I do not know, at this stage of thinking... I might nick a motor
from an unused, or broken something, and construct the
gear system...

I have not really thought about the details, but, the idea is
squarely there.

Coating continues...

Apart from that, what follows may be of interest, or, perhaps
not so much interesting to look at...



There are altogether 14 sticks and they are to be made into
7 chopstics containers. It does take time to do this kind
of things, and these are in addition to,



and these are coating ready. So, all in all, I feel that
I have done a lot today in this heat. The fan I bought
just recently for my workshop is just great!

While working on these 3 pieces, though, it suddenly
daunted on me that I might be doing something silly...

My mind then is reflected on the following illustration.



You use pegs, OK, to put the two pieces together.
I was no longer sure...

Should it be like A and B?, or C and D? I have been inconsistent...
I now think it is C and D, do you not?

You may say it is too obvious, but, if you are working
flat out in the workshop you tend not to notice the
difference...

Now, take a look at the next.



All of these, A, B, and C relate to my shatter locking mechanism.
The piece depicted in black lines is a soft iron, thin
piece of that shape. The small protrusion on its bottom

left is the key.

Here, A is the conceptual side view of the locking mechanism,
as attached to the shatters in real situation, and B is the side
view of it, confusing, is it not?

In all these three, the green bar below the blue disc is the
cut, or indentation, into which the magnetically manipulated
soft iron key plate, its protruding bottom end will lock.

You may well say that you can poke at it with a small stick
and using friction you can unlock the key...

I accept all that. However, you say that because you know the
mechanism, because I am telling you. In the real situation,
there will be something like 6 (or 12) of them in place

to cover the entire section. Can you really beat that?

I very much doubt it...
