マーライオンってシンガポールに古くから伝わる伝説の生き物だと思ってました。
でも実はちょっと違うらしいのです
ここはシンガポール川のほとりにあるマーライオン公園。頭がライオンで体が魚の姿をしているこの白い像が、シンガポールのシンボルとして有名なマーライオンです。３年前まではシンガポール川の河口にあり、水もたいして吐かないし、背丈も８メートル程度とさほど大きくなく、うしろ姿しか見ることができなかったことなどから、「世界三大がっかり」という汚名を着せられていましたが、現在はこのような立派な姿を三方向から見ることができます。
ガイドさんの話によると、マーライオンは伝説の生き物ではなく「観光の街シンガポール」の象徴として１９７２年に人為的に作られたものだそうです。観光地に必要なものはシンボル。例えば、日本と言えば富士山、ニューヨークと言えば自由の女神像など、何か魅力的なシンボルがなければ人は集まってきません。貿易港としては以前から栄えていたものの、シンガポールには特に産業もなく、美しい山や渓谷もない、観光地としてはあまり魅力のない街でした。そこで政府は１４世紀にスマトラの王子が見たという伝説の「ライオン」と、港町を思わせる「魚」を融合させた「マーライオン」という国のシンボルを作り上げ、海外からの観光客を増やすことに成功したのです。今では多くの人が「シンガポールといえばマーライオン！」と言えるほど、国の象徴として立派な役割を果たしているようです。

I thought that Merlion is an legendary animal in Singapore. But I found it a little defferent.
This is the Merlion, the symbol of Singapore. It is often said to be "one of the worst three statues" because it is not so big (8 meters high), it didn't pour so much water and we couldn't see it only from behind until three years ago. But now we can see such a great appearance.
According to the guide, the Merlion was artificially made as the symbol of "a tourist city Singapore" in 1972. People do not travel where there is nothing attractive. Singapore didn't have any tourist attractions like Mt. Fuji in Japan or the Statue of Liberty in New York before, so the government needed to make an attractive symbol in Singapore. The Merlion has lion head and fish body, which symbolized the regendary lion and the port town. Now a lot of tourist come to Singapore to see the Merlion from all over the world.
Don't think that the Merlion is the worst statue. I liked it!
