ドナルド・キーン先生も亡くなったのだ。

御山を「二荒山（にくわうさん）」と書しを、空海

御光（みひかり）一天にかゝやきて、恩澤（おんたく）八荒（はっくわう）に
あふれ、四民安堵の栖（すみか） 穏やかなり。 猶（なほ）
憚（はばかり）多くて筆を指（さし）置ぬ。

On the first day of the forth month we worshipped at the sacred mountain. In ancient times the name of this mountain was written Nikō, but when the Great Teacher Kūkai founded a temple here he changed the name to Nikkō, or Sunlight. I wonder if he was able to look into the future a thousand years later. Now its holy light shines throughout the realm, and its blessing overflow to the remotest corners. The four classes live in peace and security. But here, with due reverence, I must lay down my pen.

ひとつ書き忘れていた。芭蕉三百回忌の平成五年頃に出現した上記の自筆本によると、句のはじまりは「あなたふと」となっており、「あらたふと」ではない。
しかも芭蕉は、続く行を紙を貼って推敲している。そして弟子の曽良の句、「剃捨て黒髪山に衣更」が来るのである。
