道楽したり、怠けたりしたわけではないのに、トラブルが重なり、大きな負債を背負っ てしまった。債権者に連日責められる羽目となった。
そこで、二、三日、自分の行く末をじっくり考えてみたいと思い、父が戦争中に据えて いた田圃の中の工場跡へバッグ一つ提げて出かけていった。
二、三日考えているうちに、もう生きているのが面倒になり、いっそ死んでしまえ、と いう心境に陥ってしまった。いわば、死神がついたということであろう。
死神がつくということがどういうことなのか、この時わたくしははじめてわかったような気がした。 だんだん視野が狭くなってきて、目の前が暗くなる。 そのうちに、目の前十 センチくらいしか見えなくなってしまって、死ぬこと以外は何も考えなくなってしまう。 どうやって問題を解決するか、などというようなことには、もう頭が回らないというか、 考える気力もなくなって、死ぬしかないという気分に陥り、あとは、どうやって死のうか と、そればかりを考えるようになる。 そうなると、もう死ぬ方法も鉄道自殺など面倒にな り、とにかく手近にあるもので、パッと死にたくなる。
そんな状態になっているうちに、明け方になり、いよいよ首を吊ろうという気になった。 そして、寝ころがったまま、あのあたりに縄をかけて、などと考えながら天井を見上げ ていたところ、棚が目につき、その棚から何か小さなものがちょいとはみ出しているのが 見えた。ふと好奇心がわいて、 「あれ、何んだろうな」と思って、ひょいと立ってみた。 これが転機となって、死神がはなれたのであろう。このことがなかったら、わたくしは確 実に首を吊っていたと思う。それまでは、思考が完全に停止し、死んだ後、誰が困るかと か、そういった死ぬこと以外の、ほかのことは何んにも考えなくなっていた。
とにかく、立ち上がってそこに見たのは真新しい小さな経巻であった。幅二、三センチ、 長さ五、六センチ、厚み一センチ弱の小さなものであった。
この工場を引き払って、もう三年にもなるのに、どうしてこの棚に経巻が置き去りにな っていたのかと、 いぶかしく思いながら、ふと父から以前聞いたある話を思い出した。 父の取引先に中村語郎さんという方がおられた。父は陸軍から引き取った払下げ品の一部を製紙原料として、この中村さんの会社に納めていた。
中村さんは製紙原料問屋としては当時日本一といわれた人であったが、道楽もだいぶし たらしく、若い頃から苦労がたえず、一時は「おけらの語郎」とさえいわれた人であった。 そのどん底の時に、前途に希望を失った中村さんは「いっそ死んでしまおう」と、冬の木 枯しが吹き荒ぶ時季に、洗い晒しの浴衣一枚を着て、近くの川へ出かけた。橋の上から身 投げしようとしたところ、いまや飛び込もうとした寸前に、通りかかった人に、「お待ち なさい」と呼びとめられ、
「あなたは死ぬつもりでしょう」
といわれた。
「いや、死ぬつもりじゃない」
「ウソをいいなさい」
「いやあ、実はお察しの通りです。しかし、お情けだから黙ってこのまま死なせて下さい」 といった押し問答の末、
とにかく、わたくしのところへまずいらっしゃい。それから死んでも遅くないでしょう」 と、その場はひとまずその人の勧めにしたがい、立派な家に連れてゆかれた。ご飯を食 べさせてもらいながら、事情を話したところ、その人は、
「実はわたくしもその昔、自殺しようと思ったことがあった。 その時、やはりある人に
呼び止められて、「あなたは神仏に対する正しい理解がないから、そういうことになるのです」と諭され、少しのお金とともにお経をくれた。それで自分も死ぬのを止め、信仰を もって一生懸命に働いた結果、こうしていっぱしの商売人になった」 と、自分の過去を、中村さんに話して聞かせた。
それ以来、その人は、自分を救ってくれた人への恩返しのつもりで、その時手渡された ものと同じ経巻をたくさんつくって、多くの人に布施しているということであった。
この話を聞かされた中村さんは、大いに勇気づけられ、その経巻と、とりあえず飢えを しのげる程度のお金をいただいて、その人の家を去った。 その後、一生懸命に働いて、つ いには、日本一といわれる製紙原料問屋を築いたというのである。
そして、その中村さんもまた、助けてくれた人と同じ道を歩みたいと、一生に何十万巻 かの観音経を布施することを念願された。
ある時、中村さんは父に向かって、
「あなたは何百人もの人を使って陸軍の大きな機械相手の仕事をされているが、非常に危 険な仕事でしょうから、一つこれをお守り代わりにみなさんに差し上げてください」
ということで、この観音経を父に一千巻布施してくださったとのことである。先に述べ た通り、父は、自分の入れた臨時人夫を指揮して二十四時間作業の機械相手の仕事をして いたのである。
父は特に信仰というものはなかったが、尊敬している人格者の中村さんのお話であった から、素直にありがたくいただき、全員に配った。それが少し余っていたと思われる。 不
思議なことに、その一巻が偶然棚にころがっていたわけである。どう考えてもそんなとこ ろにあるわけはないのだが、事実あったのである。いまでも不思議に思っている。
このお経には考えてみると、一つの系譜というものがある。 この巻の布によって、 中村さん、中村さんを助けた人、そしてまたその人を救った人等々、みな自殺を思いとど まらせている。いままた、自殺寸前のわたくしがこれを手にした。 これは本当にただ事で はない。これは自分を救おうという何か大きな目に見えない意志が働いているのではない この意志に従うべきではないか、その時そう思った。
その刹那、パーッと考えが変わった。ちょうど太陽が昇る瞬間に、間に光が射すかのよ うに、あるいは夜が朝に変わるかのように、心が生き生きと晴れやかになっていった。 「死ぬのをやめよう」 「生きよう」と、わたくしは自分自身に誓った。そして、この観音経 によって、わたくしが本当に救われたならば、中村語郎さんと同様に、わたくしもこのお 布施しようと決心した。
ちょうどその時、山の向こうに朝日が昇ろうとしていた。わたくしは、その太陽に向か って合掌した。そして、声を出して誓ったのである。「どうか私に再起の力をあたえて下 さい。もしも、このお経の中に書いてある通り、私が救われたならば、私は生涯にこのお 経を百万巻布施いたします」と。
その後、三年間、わたくしは死にもの狂いで働き、当時の借金は全部返済してしまった のである。

At this time, I felt like I understood for the first time what it means to have a Shinigami. My field of vision is getting narrower and darker in front of my eyes. Before long, I could only see about ten centimeters in front of me, and I stopped thinking about anything but dying. He lost his mind, or even had the energy to think about how to solve the problem, and felt like he was going to die. come to think. When that happens, suicide by railroad becomes troublesome, and it's something that's right at your fingertips that makes you want to die instantly.
While I was in such a state, it was dawn, and I finally felt like hanging myself. And while he was lying on his back, he was looking up at the ceiling, thinking about how to put a rope around that area, when he saw a shelf and saw something small sticking out of the shelf. Suddenly, my curiosity was aroused, and I thought, "What is that?" This may have been the turning point for Shinigami to leave. If it hadn't been for this, I'm sure I would have hung myself. Until then, his thoughts had completely stopped, and he had thought of nothing else but death, such as who would be in trouble after he died.
Anyway, I stood up and saw a brand new small sutra scroll. It was small, two or three centimeters wide, five or six centimeters long, and less than one centimeter thick.
It's been three years since the factory was vacated, and I wondered why the sutra scrolls had been left behind on this shelf. One of his father's business partners was Mr. Shiro Nakamura. His father used some of the surplus goods he received from the army as raw materials for papermaking and supplied them to Mr. Nakamura's company.
Mr. Nakamura was said to be the best wholesaler of paper raw materials in Japan at the time, but he also had a great deal of indulgence. rice field. At that time, Mr. Nakamura, who had lost hope for the future, decided, "I'd rather die," and went out to a nearby river wearing only a washed yukata in the season when the cold winter was blowing. He was about to throw himself off the bridge, but just before he was about to jump, a passer-by stopped him and said, "Wait!"
"You are going to die"
It was said.
"No, I'm not going to die"
"Tell a lie"
"Well, actually, as you can imagine. However, I'm sorry, so please shut up and let me die like this."
Anyway, come to me first. After that, it won't be too late even if you die." For the time being, he followed the man's advice and was taken to a splendid house. I talked to him about the situation while he let me eat, and he said,
"Actually, a long time ago, I also thought about committing suicide.
He was stopped and told, ``This is because you don't have a correct understanding of Shinto and Buddhism.'' He gave me a little money and a sutra. That's how he stopped dying, and as a result of his faith and hard work, he became a successful merchant," he told Mr. Nakamura about his past.
Since then, this man, intending to repay the person who saved him, had made many copies of the sutras that had been handed to him at that time, and distributed them to many people.
Upon hearing this story, Mr. Nakamura was greatly encouraged, and left the man's house after receiving the sutra scroll and enough money to endure his hunger for the time being. After that, he worked hard and eventually established Japan's No. 1 paper raw material wholesaler.
And Mr. Nakamura also wanted to walk the same path as the person who helped him, and he wished to disseminate hundreds of thousands of scrolls of the Kannon Sutra in his lifetime.
One day, Mr. Nakamura turned to his father and said,
"You're working with hundreds of people working on a large machine for the army, but it's a very dangerous job, so please give me one of these as a talisman."
Therefore, he donated 1,000 scrolls of this Kannon Sutra to his father. As he said earlier, his father directed the temporary laborers he had hired to work with machines around the clock.
My father didn't have a particular faith, but he was a person of character whom I respected, Mr. Nakamura. I think it was a little left over. non
Strangely enough, the first volume happened to be lying on the shelf. No matter how you look at it, there's no way he could have been there, but it was a fact. I still wonder.
If you think about this sutra, there is a lineage. The cloth in this volume dissuades Mr. Nakamura, the person who helped Mr. Nakamura, and the person who saved him from committing suicide. Now again, I got this on the verge of suicide. This is just a matter of fact and he is not. At that time, I thought that this was not some kind of great, invisible will that was trying to save me, and that he should follow this will.
At that moment, my thoughts suddenly changed. Just at the moment when the sun rose, his mind became lively and sunny, as if a ray of light were to shine between them, or as if the night had turned into morning. "Let's stop dying", "Let's live", I vowed to myself. And if I was really saved by this Kannon Sutra, I decided to make this donation, just like Mr. Nakamura Iro.
Just then, the sun was about to rise over the mountains. I put my palms together facing the sun. Then he swore aloud. "Please give me the strength to recover. If I am saved as it is written in this sutra, I will disseminate this sutra one million times in my lifetime."
After that, I worked frantically for three years and paid off all the debts I had at that time.

準 肢功徳衆。寂静にして、常に論すれば一切諸諸の大難能く是の人 を侵すこと無し。天上 及び人間福を受くること仏の如く等し。此の如 意珠に遇はば定んで無等等を得ん。若し我れ誓願大悲の裡一人として 二世の願を成ぜずんば我れ妄罪過の裡に堕して本覚に帰らず大悲を 捨てん。
