    " This is Maria, Fräulein, "
the Captain said, and bending over the yellowish 
little face with the dark rings under the large black 
eyes, continued in a tender undertone.
   " I am sure you two will get on really well
　　together, little one.  You even have the 
    same name.
A faint smile lit the same face, and a little voice 
answered,
     " Yes,  Father,"
and
    " I am very glad to meet you,  Fräulein Maria."

血色のよくないこの女の子に前かがみになって、
やさしい低い声で言葉を続けました。

その顔にわずかに微笑みが輝き、小さな声が返って
きた．

　「はい、お父様。」

そして

　「マリア先生、お目にかかれて光栄です。」

At the second-floor landing the Captain opened a door,

and we climbed another flight of stairs, this time narrow

and winding to the third floor and our destination, a large,

sunny room opening out on a balcony.   Propped up on

a mountain of pillows in an ancient, oversized, carved

wood bed, sat a little girl.

階段を上がったところで、大佐はドアを開けました。

別の階段がありました。今度は狭い螺旋階段で３階

まで登ります。目的階はここでした。広くて、日差

しのいい部屋でバルコニーに出ることができます。

彫刻をちりばめた古風な、大きめのベッドの中で

山のように寄り合わせた枕の上に、小さな女の子が

座っていました。
