  “ The　quickest  way  is  the  subway, ”
and  our  friendly  guide  dived  at  once  into
a  staircase,  which  obviously  led  under  the
street.   This  was  really  frightening.   What
a  noise !   On  one  side  of  the  platform
express  trains  thundered  by,  while  on  the
other,  locals  came  and  went.   The  very
air  was  in  vibration,  and  I,  simply  rooted
to  the  ground,  decided  not  to  take  one
single  step  in  any  direction.   I  was  sure
I  would  die  there.

　「一番早く行く方法は地下鉄ですよ．」
そう言って、我らの親愛なるガイド様は直ちに
階段をまるでダイビングのように降りて行きま
した．それは、どう見ても地面の下に通じてい
るものでした．これには実に驚きました．何て
けたたましい音なのよ！　ホームの一方には急
行列車が、雷が落ちたような音を立てて通過す
るのでした．ホーム反対側は各駅停車の列車が
やって来ては行き、をくり返していました．
その空気が震動していました．私は恐ろしくて
足に根っこがホームに深く生えたように、その
場に立ちすくみ、もうどの方向にも一歩たりと
も動けませんでした．ここで私はこのまま死ん
でしまうんだと真剣に思ったのでした．
