42nd Annual Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium

La terre and its associations are of central importance to French culture and literature during the long nineteenth century. Changing regimes and demographics, modernization and industrialization, and new modes of communication and transportation were among a number of factors that altered the rural landscape, its inhabitants, and its occupations, transforming lifestyles and identities. The very geography of France and the French empire took new shape, domestically and in overseas territories. The sense of what it meant to live within France’s changing borders and in its changing landscape evolved as well. The 2016 colloquium proposes to explore representations of the natural, material world, as well as the cultural politics at play in relation to region, terroir, and identity. We invite contributions on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

Submissions:
Submissions for individual papers or sessions may be in French or English and should be in the form of an abstract (250–300 words) sent as an email attachment in Word to the address below. For session proposals, a separate abstract for each paper should be included. The deadline for all submissions is March 15, 2016. Please indicate your A/V requirements on your abstract.

La terre et ses associations ont joué un rôle décisif dans la culture et la littérature françaises du dix-neuvième siècle. Le changement de régime et l’évolution démographique, la modernisation et l’industrialisation, de nouveaux modes de communication et de transport, parmi d’autres facteurs, ont contribué à la modification du paysage rural et de son occupation, et à l’évolution de ses habitants, établissant les conditions pour la transformation des modes de vie et des identités. La géographie même de la France et de l’empire français a revêtu une forme nouvelle, au niveau national ainsi que dans les territoires colonisés, provoquant la transformation du sens d’une existence menée à l’intérieur des frontières mobiles et dans un paysage en pleine évolution. Ce colloque propose une réflexion sur la représentation du monde naturel et matériel, ainsi que sur la politique culturelle en jeu par rapport au régionalisme, au terroir et à l’identité. Nous vous invitons à participer à cette réflexion en nous proposant des communications sur les thèmes suivants, sans toutefois s’y limiter.
