There were several parcels wrapped in white tissue paper, and one
very large box with the inscription : 

    " For Fräulein Maria for Distribution."

Surrounded by the children, I unpacked it, and out came eight pairs
of  woollen mittens,  eight beautiful, soft, grey Wetterflecks.  and 
eight pairs of heavy boots.   This was a great surprise, and with a
guilty heart,  I hardly dared look at Baroness Matilda.

薄葉紙に包まれた小荷物も幾つかありました。そのひとつは
とても大きな箱で、

      『フロイライン・マリア宛、分配品』

と銘打ちされていました。子どもたちに取り囲まれ、私は包装を
開けてみました。すると出てきたのは、毛糸のミトン（手袋）８組、
美しく、ソフトなグレー色のレインコートが８着、厚手のブーツが
８足。これには、さすがに驚きました。そして、後ろめたくも
ありました。もうほとんど、マチルダ夫人の方に目を向ける
勇気はありませんでした。
