An introductory class of Jomon and Shindo healing techniques was held at Ann Arbor's Phoenix Center last night. These techniques are the work of Japanese healer and teacher Sensei Kazuko Kuratomi. Popular in Finland, Japan and Estonia, she is now teaching in Ann Arbor. Two more introductory classes are scheduled for May 18 and 25, 5:30 -6:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Center 220 S. Main St.
Ms. Kuratomi's techniques are practiced by office workers in Japan, by hundreds at rock festivals in Finland and in a variety of other venues. The work is a unique blend of ancient and modern Japanese healing arts, combining exercise with massage.
Ms. Kuratomi was in early stages of developing these techniques 14 years ago during her first stay in Ann Arbor. She is now teaching students here, and chose Ann Arbor to formally introduce her work in the U.S. Her student Cynthia Conklin, proprietor of Eastern Sun Shiatsu, organized and co-taught the session last night. She has known Ms. Kuratomi since 1992.
Jomon exercises are named after the ancient period of history in Japan (14,000 – 4000 BCE) because they are based on ancient theories (known as Hirata Zones). Ms. Kuratomi has found these methods to affect the instinctual body. Shindo, Japanese word for "guidance by the heart," is based on the more modern development of Zen Meridians (developed by Shizuto Masunaga, a Japanese Shiatsu master). Both methods are effective to address and prevent many modern diseases. Both are also enhanced by Ms. Kuratomi's research and inspiration. The techniques are simple to learn and practice in a group or on your own.
Two more introductory classes are being offered this month. A class schedule will be available on May 25. There are also teacher-training opportunities.
* Additional photographs are available including head shot of Kazuko, and possibly one of Jomon being practices in a Japanese office. Also interview with Kazuko can be arranged with an interpreter.
