しかし、のちに、この経典こそ、二六〇〇年もむかしに、釈尊が、未来社会のために
予言されていたおどろくべきお経であったことがわかったのである。 ド
どうしてわかったのか?
如来がおすがたをあらわして、これを証明されたのである。
まず、このお経の要旨を説明しよう。
このお経の要旨はこうである。

一、如来のもとにおいて功徳をうえる。
二、正法の仏法において功徳をうえる。

る。これが、この経典の要旨である。
この経典を、最初、手にしたときIそれは十年以上も前のことだがIわたくしは
非常な魅力と、つづいて、それに正比例する落胆を味わったのである。
非常な魅力とはなにかというと、七科三十七道品の成仏法を、修行せずして五下分結
(前の章に解説した)を断じ、須陀逼から阿那含にまで到達できる、ということである。
(ただし、原文では、
『この三福道は窮尽すべからず、涅槃界に至ることを得と謂うなり』
とある。「自須陀逼至阿那含断五下分結」はない。
しかし、考えてみると、功徳を種えるという梵行だけで最終的な涅槃にまで到達して
しまうというのは、おかしいのである。それでは、道品法の否定になってしまう。そこ
のところはどうなっているのか。
ナゾはすぐ解けた。釈尊は、”涅槃に至る‘とはおっしゃっていないのである。涅槃
界に至ると表現しているのである。涅槃に到達、とあれば、阿羅漢であるが、涅槃界と
なると、須陀肛・斯陀含・阿那含・阿羅漢の。四沙門果”の境界をさすことになる。
そこで、こういう場合、他の阿含経ではどうなっているかと調べてみると、他の阿含
経では、略さずに記していることがわかった。たとえば、おなじ『増一阿含経・壱入道
品』では、
『……亦、須陀原・斯陀含・阿那含の三乗の道を成じ……』
とあり、三宝品では、
『現法の中に於て漏尽きて阿那含を得ん』
とあり、火滅品では、
において比丘、五下分結を滅して即ち彼に般涅槃して云々』
とある。つまり、この三供養品は、ここのところを略しているわけである。そういう
経は他にもある。
そこで、意を通ずるために、この略している部分を、これらの経からとって「自須陀
原至阿那合断五下分結」と入れたのである。これによって、誤解を招くことを避けたわ
けである。)
しかしいずれにしてもこんな魅力的なことはない。これが事実であれば、とくにすぐ
れた資質がなくても、また、苦難にみちた修行をしなくても、仏道をきわめることがで
きるのである。こんなすばらしいことはない。
だがI、待てよ、とわたくしは考えた。
これは、ひょっとしたら、後世の、ごく初期の大乗経典がまぎれこんだのではなかろ
うかと考えたのである。というのは、これまでのべてきた通り、大乗仏教は釈尊の成仏
法を捨て去って、そのかわり、仏の慈悲にすがれば成仏できる、と教えている。する
と、この経も結局それとおなじで、阿弥陀経、法華経となんら変わりはないことになっ
てしまうのではないか、おかしい、そう考えた。
しかし、れっきとした阿合部の経典である。やはり、釈尊のおことばと信じたい。い
や、信ずべきだ。至難きわまる成仏法を修行せずして、成仏する! いや、なんとか信
じたい!
そう思って、何百ぺん、何千ぺんも、この経典に目を凝らした。このお経を信じた
い一心で、一心ふらんに目を凝らしたのである。
